MAN PrimeServ Methanol Retrofit

MAN PrimeServ, the after-sales brand of MAN Energy Solutions, has announced an exciting new initiative: starting in 2025, it will offer a retrofit package designed to convert conventional MAN four-stroke engines to dual-fuel methanol operation. This upgrade will initially focus on transforming existing MAN 48/60 engines into the latest MAN 51/60R-DF-M engine type, which is equipped with methanol capability.

First conversions cover retrofit of older MAN 48/60 engines to modern MAN 51/60DF engines with methanol capability; initiative represents climate-neutral future-solution for existing fleets.

The retrofit package has been in development for an extended period and has undergone rigorous testing at MAN’s Augsburg, Germany plant since summer 2024. The first conversions are scheduled to take place in autumn 2025 for a pilot customer, with the retrofit package becoming available to the general market shortly thereafter.

Stefan Eefting, Head of MAN PrimeServ Germany, emphasized the significance of this initiative “Climate-neutral shipping can only be achieved with synthetic fuels, and green methanol is particularly well-suited for four-stroke applications due to its favorable energy density. We have already received numerous retrofit inquiries from customers eager to transition to methanol. With our new methanol-retrofit package, we provide an economically attractive option for converting older engines to a future-proof type. This initiative not only supports climate protection but also ensures that our customers’ investments in our engines remain viable, with a compelling return on investment.”

Alexander Knafl, Head of Engineering R&D Four-Stroke at MAN Energy Solutions, added “We have accumulated substantial experience with methanol operation through a series of tests on the MAN 51/60R-DF-M. The results have been promising in both combustion management and methanol injection. We are now focusing on further optimization to maintain consistently high engine efficiency, regardless of whether the fuel is diesel or methanol.”

Economically Attractive Retrofit Option

From 2025, customers will have the opportunity to retrofit their conventional MAN 48/60 engines to the advanced MAN 51/60R-DF-M engines, which will be available with or without a common-rail system. The upgraded engines will feature methanol capability and will benefit from enhanced efficiency during diesel operation. Additionally, the engines will be equipped with the latest control and safety systems from MAN Energy Solutions.

Bernd Siebert, Head of Retrofits & Upgrades at MAN PrimeServ, highlighted the importance of this retrofit approach “Converting existing engines to dual-fuel operation with synthetic fuels is crucial for achieving climate-neutral shipping. Alongside new engines, we need effective solutions for decarbonizing the existing fleet. Ships typically have a service life of 20 to 30 years, and retrofitting is a more economically viable option compared to installing new engines or building new ships.
