In a significant development for the maritime industry’s quest for eco-friendly fuel solutions, Lloyd’s Register (LR) has recently awarded Approval in Principle (AiP) to HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) for their cutting-edge ammonia fuel supply system. This milestone approval paves the way for the system’s integration into new ammonia-powered vessels.
The newly designed ammonia fuel supply system boasts seamless compatibility with high-efficiency cargo handling systems and ammonia engines, promising enhanced performance and sustainability in maritime operations.
LR’s rigorous risk-based certification (RBC-1) process has certified the fuel supply system, marking the successful culmination of a collaborative Joint Development Project (JDP) between LR and HD KSOE. This collaborative effort, initiated in April 2024, aimed to develop and refine the design concept of an efficient and reliable ammonia fuel supply system tailored for ammonia-fueled vessels. The AiP signifies a substantial leap forward in LR and HD KSOE’s joint mission to spearhead innovative solutions for emission reduction within the maritime sector.
Ammonia, with its potential to fulfill the escalating demand for emission reduction solutions, emerges as a promising alternative fuel for maritime applications. The approved fuel supply system not only addresses the immediate need for sustainable fuel solutions but also significantly contributes to global efforts aimed at curbing greenhouse gas emissions from the maritime fleet.
Young-Doo Kim, Global Technical Support Office Representative for Korea at Lloyd’s Register, said “This approval in principle represents another significant step for developing the technology required for shipowners and operators’ adoption of ammonia, one of the primary candidate fuels for the maritime energy transition. We are pleased to continue our strong working relationship with HD KSOE through this joint project that will provide a valuable solution for ammonia-propelled ships.”
Young-jun Nam, Vice President & COO of HD KSOE, said “Ammonia is a zero-carbon fuel that is attracting great attention in terms of economics and supply stability. HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering will lead the field of eco-friendly equipment and materials to take the lead in commercializing ammonia in 2025.”
The LR’s Approval in Principle signifies not only a technological breakthrough but also a pivotal moment in the ongoing global transition towards sustainable maritime practices. As the industry continues to seek alternative fuels to traditional marine fuels, partnerships like the one between LR and HD KSOE are instrumental in driving innovation and fostering a greener future for maritime transportation.
