Klaipėda Port has launched Rasa, the world’s first waste collection vessel powered by green hydrogen and electricity, marking a major step toward zero-emission port operations. Built through Lithuanian–Estonian cooperation, the €12 million vessel uses locally produced hydrogen and advanced fuel cell technology to handle ship waste while emitting only water vapour.
Klaipėda | June 18, 2026 – A quiet but defining shift in maritime decarbonisation took place this week at the Port of Klaipėda, where a new type of workhorse entered service: Rasa, the world’s first waste collection vessel powered by a combination of green hydrogen and electricity.
More than a ceremonial naming, the vessel’s christening marks a tangible step from concept to commercial deployment for hydrogen in port-side operations, an area of shipping often overlooked in the energy transition narrative, yet central to emissions reduction in busy maritime hubs.
The ceremony brought together stakeholders from across the Baltic Sea region, including the First Ladies of Lithuania and Estonia, underscoring the vessel’s symbolic weight as a product of cross-border industrial cooperation and shared climate ambition.
A port utility vessel reimagined for zero emissions
Designed to collect bilge water, sludge, and ship-generated waste from vessels calling at port, Rasa replaces conventional diesel-powered port service craft with a fully zero-emission propulsion system. The vessel operates on green hydrogen produced locally in Klaipėda, supplemented by electric battery systems for hybrid optimisation during operations.
At 42 metres in length, Rasa is equipped with dedicated waste storage tanks and an advanced onboard bilge water treatment system, enabling safe transfer of treated water to municipal wastewater facilities. Its operational profile positions it at the intersection of environmental compliance, port services, and the emerging hydrogen maritime value chain.
For the port ecosystem, the significance goes beyond engineering novelty. Waste collection vessels operate daily in constrained harbour waters, making them ideal candidates for early adoption of alternative fuels due to predictable routes, short distances, and return-to-base refuelling cycles.
Klaipėda’s hydrogen strategy takes shape
For the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority, Rasa is part of a broader infrastructure and fuel transition strategy that is beginning to reshape the Baltic port’s energy profile.
Lithuania’s recent commissioning of its first hydrogen production and refuelling station in Klaipėda has created the enabling infrastructure for vessels like Rasa to move from prototype to operational reality. Together, these developments position the port as an early testbed for hydrogen integration in Northern European shipping logistics.
Lithuania’s Minister of Transport and Communications, Juras Taminskas, framed the vessel as part of a broader industrial pivot. “We are launching one of the world’s first hydrogen-powered vessels, and just weeks ago opened Lithuania’s first hydrogen production and refuelling station here in Klaipėda. Together, these developments turn a new page in Lithuania’s story as a maritime nation.”
Engineering collaboration across the Baltic
The Rasa project is also a case study in regional maritime industrial integration, bringing together shipbuilding expertise from Lithuania and Estonia in a single platform.
The hull and partial outfitting were completed by the Western Shipyard Group at the Western Baltic Shipyard in Klaipėda. Final outfitting, system integration, and sea trials were conducted by Estonia’s Baltic Workboats, which also served as the main contractor and vessel designer.
According to Western Shipyard Group CEO Arnoldas Šileika, the vessel demonstrates how regional collaboration can move beyond traditional shipbuilding contracts into high-value clean technology integration. “It proves that by combining Lithuanian and Estonian engineering expertise, it is possible to develop solutions that meet the highest technological and environmental standards.”
For Baltic Workboats, the project marked multiple firsts: its first tanker-type vessel, its largest integration of electric and battery systems, and its first installation of a hydrogen propulsion system onboard.
CEO Margus Vanaselja described the build as challenging but defining “RASA is a prime example of how, together with our partners from the BLRT Group, we can deliver vessels that would not be possible alone.”
Hydrogen propulsion moves from demonstration to duty cycle
A key technology partner, Genevos, supplied the hydrogen fuel cell system, including storage, fuel cell modules, and software integration. The deployment is significant because port service vessels operate in real-world, high-frequency duty cycles, conditions often cited as a proving ground for alternative fuels beyond pilot projects and demonstration fleets.
Genevos CEO Rebecca Sharp emphasised the operational importance of the launch “The vessel demonstrates that hydrogen power is ready to move beyond demonstration and into demanding maritime operations.”
The integration of hydrogen systems into a working port vessel represents a shift in narrative for the sector, where hydrogen has often been positioned as a long-term deep-sea shipping solution rather than a near-term port application.
A small vessel with system-wide implications
While Rasa represents a relatively modest €12 million investment, its significance lies in system replication potential rather than scale. Waste collection and auxiliary port craft form a critical but often under-optimised segment of maritime emissions inventories in busy ports. If replicated across European port networks, hydrogen-electric hybrid vessels could reduce emissions in harbour operations without requiring full-scale transformation of deep-sea fleets.
Environmental integration is also built into its operational design. Waste collected onboard is processed through onboard treatment systems, reducing the environmental burden on port infrastructure while improving compliance with increasingly stringent EU maritime environmental regulations.
Baltic Sea region positioning in the energy transition
Beyond Klaipėda, the vessel positions the Baltic Sea region as an emerging laboratory for maritime decarbonisation technologies. With relatively compact shipping routes, strong port-state coordination, and active shipbuilding industries, the region has become an early adopter of alternative marine fuels including hydrogen, methanol, and electrification.
The presence of both Lithuanian and Estonian first ladies at the naming ceremony underscored the diplomatic dimension of maritime innovation, where shipbuilding, energy policy, and industrial strategy increasingly intersect.
As Sirje Karis, First Lady of Estonia, noted “The most enduring solutions are developed through cooperation.”
A signal for bunkering and marine fuel markets
For the bunkering and marine fuels sector, Rasa represents a microcosm of a larger structural shift underway in port energy ecosystems. Hydrogen bunkering infrastructure, once theoretical, is now being deployed alongside traditional marine fuel supply chains.
While hydrogen is unlikely to displace conventional marine fuels in deep-sea shipping in the near term, its early adoption in port operations suggests a parallel fuel ecosystem is emerging, one that will require new logistics, storage, safety frameworks, and pricing structures. In Klaipėda, that transition is no longer conceptual. It is operational.
A vessel named for renewal
The name Rasa, meaning “dew” in Lithuanian, was chosen for its cultural association with purity, renewal, and life. In this case, it also reflects a technical promise: a vessel designed to operate without carbon emissions, leaving behind only water vapour.
Whether Rasa becomes a blueprint for global replication or remains a regional pioneer will depend on how quickly hydrogen infrastructure scales across ports. But its arrival in Klaipėda signals a clear inflection point: zero-emission port operations are no longer a future ambitionm they are beginning to enter daily service.
