K Line Delivery of LNG Fueled Car Carrier

Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (K LINE) has officially taken delivery of the OCEANUS HIGHWAY, an LNG-fueled car carrier with a capacity to transport 6,900 vehicles. Delivered on February 27, this vessel represents a major step in K LINE’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact. The vessel was constructed by SHIN KURUSHIMA TOYOHASHI SHIPBUILDING CO., LTD.

A naming ceremony was held on the delivery day, where the vessel was named OCEANUS HIGHWAY by Mr. Kazuhiko Sumi, Managing Executive Officer of Mazda Motor Corporation, highlighting a strong partnership between automotive and maritime sectors in the drive towards sustainable shipping.

Environmental Benefits of LNG Fuel

The OCEANUS HIGHWAY is primarily fueled by liquefied natural gas (LNG), which significantly reduces emissions. LNG is expected to lower carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 25% to 30% compared to conventional fuels. Additionally, LNG fuel helps eliminate almost all sulfur oxides (SOx) emissions, which are harmful to air quality.

These environmental benefits align with K LINE’s Environmental Vision 2050 – Blue Seas for the Future. The company has set an ambitious interim goal of reducing CO2 emissions efficiency by 50% by 2030, surpassing the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) target of a 40% reduction. Ultimately, K LINE aims for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

The vessel’s dimensions and operational capabilities are tailored to meet the growing demand for environmentally responsible transportation solutions, offering efficient and sustainable shipping operations.

Zero-Emission Accelerating Ship Finance Program

In line with its sustainability objectives, K LINE financed the construction of the OCEANUS HIGHWAY using the Zero-Emission Accelerating Ship Finance program. This program, jointly operated by the Development Bank of Japan (DBJ) and Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK), supports the shipping industry’s transition toward decarbonization.

The OCEANUS HIGHWAY received an A rating from ClassNK for its high decarbonization, environmentally friendly performance, and innovative design. This evaluation is a testament to the vessel’s ability to reduce emissions and its alignment with international standards, including compliance with IMO’s regulations on nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulfur oxides (SOx).

K Line’s Environmental Vision for the Future

K LINE continues to focus on decarbonization as part of its broader environmental strategy. The OCEANUS HIGHWAY is part of the company’s action plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. As part of its Environmental Vision 2050 – Blue Seas for the Future, K LINE is exploring alternative fuels such as ammonia, hydrogen, and bio-LNG, alongside synthetic fuels, to further reduce the environmental impact of its operations.

The introduction of LNG-powered vessels is one of many steps K LINE is taking to meet its ambitious 2050 goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable shipping practices.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Cleaner Shipping

The delivery of the OCEANUS HIGHWAY marks an important step in the maritime industry’s journey toward cleaner, more sustainable operations. The continued adoption of LNG as a marine fuel, along with further investments in innovative technologies, will help drive reductions in shipping emissions and foster a more environmentally friendly shipping industry. For the bunkering sector, this shift represents a growing demand for low-emission fuels, likely leading to further innovation in fuel solutions and sustainable practices.
