Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (K LINE) has marked a significant milestone in maritime sustainability by successfully completing its first trial use of marine B100 biofuel on the car carrier APOLLON HIGHWAY, operated by the company. This initiative underscores K LINE’s commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation in the shipping industry.

The marine B100 biofuel, supplied by global energy management company World Fuel Services, was delivered to the vessel at the Belgium port of Zeebrugge on March 31, 2024. Following the departure from the Europe Emission Control Area, the vessel commenced the utilization of the B100 biofuel. The trial, aimed at assessing the viability and efficacy of marine biofuels, concluded on April 30th.

Marine biofuels represent a promising environmentally friendly alternative to traditional fuels, with the potential to significantly reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 80-90% in the well-to-wake process, without necessitating modifications to current engine specifications. The marine B100 biofuel utilized in the trial consists of 100% biodiesel, showcasing its potential as a sustainable solution for the maritime sector.

As part of its action plan to achieve these targets, K LINE remains dedicated to exploring and adopting new fuels with minimal environmental impact.
