Hong Kong Maritime Launches LNG Tugs

On July 25, the Marine Department representatives attended a significant ceremony hosted by Hongkong Salvage & Towage Services Limited, marking the commissioning of Hong Kong’s first two locally licensed LNG (liquefied natural gas) diesel dual-fuel tugs.

Addressing the celebration ceremony, Deputy Director of Marine Mr. Shi Qiang remarked, “The Government is committed to transforming Hong Kong into a green port and advancing the use of environmentally friendly marine fuels with reduced or zero-carbon emissions to replace the conventional marine petroleum fuels used by vessels today. The commissioning of the first two locally licensed tugs with dual-fuel engine systems represents a significant milestone in encouraging more local vessels to adopt these new fuels and align with the International Maritime Organization’s goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping by around 2050. We eagerly anticipate continuing our collaboration with the industry to jointly promote and achieve sustainable development within the shipping sector.”

In alignment with these objectives, the government introduced the Action Plan on Maritime and Port Development Strategy in December 2023. This plan outlines four directions and ten strategies aimed at driving the development of a green port, including the exploration of green fuel bunkering for both local and ocean-going vessels. A dedicated action plan for Hong Kong’s transformation into a green maritime fuelbunkering hub is expected to be published later this year. Additionally, the Shipping Legislation (Use of Fuels and Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill 2024 has been introduced into the Legislative Council to facilitate the safe utilization of new fuels like LNG by vessels.

The newly commissioned tugs, named LNG Sentinel I and LNG Sentinel II, each measure 42 meters in length, 16 meters in beam, and have a gross tonnage of 1,275. They are equipped with two electric motor-driven azimuth thrusters, delivering a combined power of 6,000 kilowatts and achieving a maximum speed of 14 knots.

Hong Kong Maritime – A Major Global Maritime Hub

Hong Kong, a major global maritime hub, boasts one of the busiest and most efficient port systems in the world. The Port of Hong Kong, which handles around 20 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) annually, is a crucial gateway for international trade. The city’s maritime sector contributes significantly to its economy, with maritime and port activities accounting for approximately 4% of Hong Kong’s GDP.

Hong Kong’s strategic location along major shipping routes enhances its role as a pivotal transshipment center. The port infrastructure includes modern container terminals, sophisticated logistics facilities, and robust customs services, ensuring efficient cargo handling and international connectivity. The Hong Kong Marine Department oversees these operations, promoting safety, environmental protection, and the development of green maritime technologies.
