Dan Hook: The RAD 120 was designed to meet growing demand for higher-power propulsion solutions in the marine sector. Building on the success of our RAD 40 system, it delivers enhanced thrust and performance capabilities without compromising on installation flexibility or operational capability.
Bunker Market: A standout feature of the RAD 120 is the closed-circuit cooling. Why was this engineering choice so critical for your target markets?
Dan Hook: The closed-circuit cooling system ensures ultra-low maintenance and inherent reliability in harsh marine environments. Despite being in a higher power class, the RAD 120, like the RAD 40, is engineered so that the outboard remains behind the transom when tilted up, preserving valuable deck space.
Operational Success: The Williams Shipping Case Study
Bunker Market: Your recent collaboration with Williams Shipping in Southampton provided a live look at electric operations in a busy hub. What did this project demonstrate about the intersection of propulsion and autonomy?
Dan Hook: This was a fantastic project to be a part of. In partnership with Williams Shipping, RAD Propulsion successfully designed, developed, and operated a custom micro-freight delivery vessel, equipped with a cutting-edge autonomous control system and powered by twin RAD 40 electric outboards.
This innovative vessel was deployed in one of the UK’s busiest ports, transporting cargo and crew with precision and efficiency. Our advanced autonomy system integrated seamlessly with remote piloting systems, lowering both operational costs and crew workload.
Global Expansion: The North American Frontier
Bunker Market: RAD recently opened a hub in Charleston, South Carolina, and partnered with Charged Marine. Why was physical infrastructure in the US so critical to your 2026 strategy?
Dan Hook: We have been remotely supporting some great initial US customers for the last few years, and as the number of opportunities grows, we decided it was time to offer first-class support in-country. There is a growing demand for electric (battery-only and hybrid) in the commercial, defense, and recreational markets in the US. We best serve this with a team on the ground, providing stock, spares, and expert advice.

Dan Hook: Charged Marine has been a great partner in helping us understand the US market, making introductions to customers, and ensuring we are fully prepared for successful growth there.
Market Outlook: Navigating the Electric Transition
Bunker Market: The global marine hybrid and electric market is projected to reach approximately $5.8 billion by the end of 2026. What are the key external factors influencing your operations today?
Dan Hook: We see different factors across the various sectors we support. In the defense sector, there is undeniably a move toward more automation and uncrewed systems, which fits perfectly with our digitally controlled drives. There is also a growing requirement for low above- and below-water noise signatures given current global security threats. In the commercial sector, we see uncertainty in fossil fuel prices and a growing interest in electric propulsion, renewable energy, and even micro-grids in remote harbors and worksites.
Bunker Market: From a “Bunker Market” perspective, how do you view the future of marine energy distribution?
Dan Hook: From our own experience operating and selling electric boats, we can honestly say we have found it easier to find electricity for charging than fuel. Talking to our customers, we are hearing the same feedback. The distribution of electricity is mature and far-reaching; I am confident it will play an ever-growing role in marine vessel propulsion.
