The Grimaldi Group, renowned for its innovation and excellence in maritime transportation, has welcomed the latest addition to its modern fleet, The Great Abidjan. This vessel marks the fourth of six multipurpose ro-ro units of the innovative “G5” class, commissioned from the esteemed Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co. Ltd shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea. On April 23, the naming and delivery ceremony for this state-of-the-art ship took place at the shipyard, signifying a significant milestone for both the Grimaldi Group and Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co. Ltd.
The event was graced by esteemed personalities including Diego Pacella, President of Grimaldi Deep Sea S.p.A., along with representatives from the Italian shipping company’s Euromed & Far East/Europe Line, and dignitaries from Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co. Ltd. The vessel was honored with Emilia Gatto, the Italian Ambassador to Seoul, as its godmother, underscoring the significance of the partnership between Italy and South Korea in the maritime industry.
The Great Abidjan boasts impressive specifications with a length of 250 meters, a beam of 38 meters, and a deadweight of 45,684 tonnes. Its design, tailored meticulously to meet the evolving needs of the Grimaldi Group and its customers, allows for the transportation of 4,700 linear meters of rolling freight, 2,500 CEU (Car Equivalent Units), and 2,000 TEU (Twenty Foot Equivalent Units). Notably, compared to its predecessors, the G5-class vessels have doubled container capacity while maintaining the same rolling freight capacity.
Aside from its remarkable loading capacity, The Great Abidjan showcases cutting-edge technological solutions aimed at enhancing energy efficiency and minimizing environmental impact. This emphasis on sustainability enables a significant reduction in CO2 emissions per tonne transported, up to 43% compared to other Grimaldi con-ro multipurpose ships.
“The Great Abidjan is the outcome of a long and fruitful co-operation with Hyundai Mipo Dockyard which may continue in the future for the renewal of our existing fleet”, stated Diego Pacella, President of Grimaldi Deep Sea S.p.A. “Named after a port that has been regularly included in the routes served by our Group for years, the vessel will be deployed, like her three sister vessels already in operation, on our deepsea connections between Northern Europe and West Africa”, concluded Diego Pacella.
