Nordic energy pioneer Gasum is turning its fleet into a regulatory powerhouse, leveraging bio-LNG to drive emission reductions and secure FuelEU Maritime compliance surplus.
Espoo, Finland | October 23, 2025 – In a move that signals the next frontier of sustainable shipping, Gasum’s fleet of gas-powered vessels has been operating entirely on liquefied biogas (bio-LNG), not only reducing its own emissions but also generating a significant surplus for the FuelEU Maritime compliance pool. This innovative approach positions Gasum at the forefront of the industry’s green transition, proving that renewable fuels can simultaneously drive environmental impact and regulatory advantage.
Fleet Transformation: Powering Change at Sea
Gasum’s fleet consists of:
- Two bunkering vessels, delivering LNG and bio-LNG directly to ships across Northern Europe.
- Two carrier vessels, transporting liquefied gas throughout the Nordics and beyond.
Each vessel features dual-fuel gas engines, capable of seamlessly operating on both LNG and bio-LNG. By running its own vessels on renewable bio-LNG, Gasum effectively transforms its fleet into “compliance generators,” adding flexibility and surplus capacity to its FuelEU Maritime pool.
“As the first FuelEU Maritime regulation year nears its close, ship owners face a critical moment,” said Jacob Granqvist, Vice President, Maritime, Gasum. “Our pool offers the most reliable path to compliance. By contributing our own fleet, we create additional surplus—but capacity remains limited, emphasizing the value of acting now.”
Bio-LNG: The Compliance Engine
Bio-LNG is more than a fuel—it’s a compliance catalyst. With life-cycle emissions up to 90% lower than conventional marine fuels like MGO, and even negative when sourced from manure, bio-LNG offers unmatched regulatory advantage.
FuelEU Maritime allows operators to form compliance pools, balancing emissions across fleets for maximum efficiency. Gasum’s vessels, together with partners’ dual-fuel vessels, generate surplus emission reductions that can be allocated across the pool, helping other operators meet renewable fuel obligations without operational compromise.
Strategic Partnerships and Fleet Ownership
Gasum’s compliance pool is strengthened by strategic collaborations:
- Anthony Veder, charterer of Gasum’s gas carrier vessels and an active offtaker in the pool.
- Coralius, a bunkering vessel jointly owned by Anthony Veder and Sirius Shipping.
- Kairos, a bunkering vessel owned by Bernhard Schulte.
By combining these assets, Gasum maximizes the flexibility and impact of its pool, enabling the maritime industry to embrace bio-LNG as a practical, high-impact solution.
Leading the Green Energy Revolution
Gasum is not just responding to regulations—it is shaping the future of maritime energy. Its goal is to dramatically increase bio-LNG availability in Northwest Europe, empowering operators to decarbonize at scale. Beyond shipping, Gasum delivers clean energy expertise for industry, power generation, and transport, helping clients reduce carbon footprints while advancing a carbon-neutral future on land and at sea.
As the maritime industry faces intensifying emissions regulations, Gasum’s bold strategy demonstrates that renewable methane is not a distant promise—it is a tangible solution today, combining operational efficiency, environmental stewardship, and regulatory compliance into a single, transformative package.
