Enagás, a leading Spanish energy company, is set to launch a pioneering BioLNG supply service at its regasification terminals in Barcelona and Huelva, furthering its commitment to advancing decarbonisation in the maritime industry. This new service, scheduled to begin in March, will enable the loading of BioLNG—a sustainable fuel derived from domestic and industrial organic waste—onto tankers and ships, marking a significant milestone in the company’s decarbonisation efforts and contributing to Europe’s broader environmental goals.
Interconnected Infrastructure for BioLNG Supply
This innovative BioLNG service is one of the first in Europe to utilise interconnected infrastructure. The biomethane injected into the gas network will be recognised as BioLNG, which will then be supplied directly from the terminals in Barcelona and Huelva. This process enables the efficient production and distribution of BioLNG, an important step in reducing the carbon footprint of maritime transport.
Sustainability and Compliance with EU Standards
The new BioLNG supply service at the Barcelona and Huelva terminals is fully compliant with the environmental, social, and traceability criteria established by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC EU) and the European Commission. This certification ensures that Enagás meets stringent sustainability requirements, further solidifying the company’s dedication to providing cleaner fuel alternatives for the maritime industry.
Enagás’ Role in Decarbonising Maritime Transport
This initiative is part of Enagás’ long-standing efforts to support the decarbonisation of maritime transport. Over the past decade, the company has been involved in numerous projects aimed at reducing the environmental impact of the maritime sector, including the Core LNGas Hive and LNGas Hive 2 projects. Enagás has also invested in small-scale infrastructure across its terminals to adapt to the growing demand for cleaner fuels, such as BioLNG.
Enagás has played an active role in developing and implementing procedures and regulations for LNG bunkering systems, positioning the company as a leader in this growing sector. This includes the establishment of bunkering infrastructure to support the increasing demand for LNG as a marine fuel for ships.
Growth of LNG Bunkering in Spain
LNG bunkering in Spain has experienced significant growth in recent years, with a substantial increase in the amount of fuel supplied. From 2022 to 2024, Spain’s LNG bunkering activity saw a ninefold increase, reaching 3.8 TWh supplied in 2024. Of this total, 3.1 TWh was supplied to small vessels through Ship to Ship (STS) operations, and 0.7 TWh was supplied to tankers via Truck to Ship (TTS) operations. This growth underscores the increasing demand for LNG as a maritime fuel and the crucial role of Enagás’ terminals in meeting this demand.
Barcelona and Huelva Terminals Lead LNG Bunkering in Spain
The Huelva and Barcelona terminals have become central to Spain’s LNG bunkering efforts, supplying nearly all the LNG bunkering fuel in the country in 2024. Since the beginning of LNG bunkering operations at these terminals, they have already completed over 300 refuellings to small-scale vessels, further establishing themselves as key infrastructure for the maritime fuel market.
BioLNG Supply to Strengthen Spain’s Bunkering Sector
The introduction of BioLNG supply at the Barcelona and Huelva terminals is set to bolster the growth of LNG bunkering in Spain, reaffirming Enagás’ commitment to sustainability and innovation in the maritime industry. By offering a cleaner and more sustainable fuel option, the BioLNG service will support the decarbonisation of the maritime sector, helping the industry transition towards a greener future.
