Deltamarin Design Methanol Ready Stena RoRo

Deltamarin, a global provider of ship design, has announced a significant new contract with China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Weihai) to design and engineer the 14th and 15th vessels in Stena RoRo’s renowned E-Flexer series. This latest agreement encompasses the complete basic and detailed design for two new multi-fuel E-Flexer RoPax vessels, which will be built to be methanol-ready.

Scheduled for delivery in April and August 2027, these advanced vessels will be chartered by Attica Group for operations on Adriatic routes. The contract also includes an option for two additional E-Flexers. The new vessels will be constructed at the CMI Jinling Shipyard (Weihai) in China and will feature state-of-the-art multi-fuel engines. Designed for versatility, these engines will support operations on conventional marine fuels (HFO or MGO), biodiesel, and be prepared for methanol use. Additionally, the vessels will be equipped with a PTI/PTO setup and carry a “Battery power” notation, offering the potential for future battery propulsion integration.

The innovative design aims to enhance fuel efficiency and cut greenhouse gas emissions by up to 60% per transport work compared to existing vessels. This aligns with Attica Group’s commitment to meeting current and future environmental standards.

Janne Uotila, Managing Director of Deltamarin, emphasized the importance of this contract in strengthening the company’s partnership with Stena RoRo and China Merchants Jinling Shipyard. “This new contract reflects the strong ongoing partnership between Deltamarin, Stena RoRo, and China Merchants Jinling Shipyard. The continued interest in the E-Flexer vessels, as evidenced by the high number of orders, highlights their value and positions them as the leading solution in their class. We value our longstanding partnership with Stena and CMI and look forward to advancing these projects together,” Uotila stated.

Per Westling, CEO of Stena RoRo AB, noted the groundbreaking nature of this design. “With Attica and Deltamarin, we have developed the most bespoke E-Flexer concept so far. This design marks a new landmark for highly efficient, cost-effective, and future-proof RoPax vessels. The vessel’s capability to use both conventional fuels and future fuels, including bio- and e-Methanol, as well as batteries for propulsion, ensures that it can achieve zero CO2 emissions in the future,” Westling said. He also acknowledged the successful collaboration between Deltamarin, CMI Jinling (Weihai) Shipyard, and Stena RoRo.
