Tianjin, China | March 3, 2026 – The maritime industry’s transition toward alternative fuels reached a major milestone this week with the delivery of the CMA CGM MONTE CRISTO. This vessel is the first in a high-profile series of six 15,000 TEU container ships featuring methanol dual-fuel technology, marking a significant technical achievement for the CMA CGM Group, Bureau Veritas (BV), and Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd. (DSIC) Tianjin.
As the first large-scale collaboration between BV and DSIC Tianjin in the green propulsion sector, the delivery underscores the shifting landscape of global bunkering and ship design as owners move aggressively toward net-zero targets.
Technical Specifications: Efficiency by Design
The CMA CGM MONTE CRISTO is a New Panamax-class powerhouse designed for maximum cargo intake and minimum environmental impact. Its design parameters reflect the cutting edge of modern naval architecture:
- Length: 366 meters
- Beam (Width): 51 meters
- Capacity: 16,204 TEU (Nominal)
- Efficiency: EEDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index) rating is more than 60% below the baseline.
The vessel incorporates a suite of energy-saving features, including optimized hull lines, high-efficiency propellers, and advanced pre-swirl devices. However, the centerpiece is its methanol dual-fuel propulsion system, which allows the ship to run on green methanol, virtually eliminating SOx and significantly reducing NOx and CO2 emissions.
Overcoming Technical Hurdles: The BV-DSIC Collaboration
The integration of methanol systems at this scale presented unique engineering challenges, particularly as it was the first application of such technology at the DSIC Tianjin yard. To ensure a seamless delivery, Bureau Veritas deployed a specialized cross-disciplinary task force.
Key technical support included:
- Shaft Alignment: BV’s headquarters team provided critical data analysis for complex alignment calculations necessitated by the dual-fuel engine configuration.
- Fuel System Commissioning: Gas carrier specialists provided on-site guidance for the methanol fuel systems and conducted specialized training for shipyard personnel.
- Sea Trials: During rigorous testing, BV surveyors monitored methanol-mode commissioning, emission monitoring, and “unmanned engine room” validation.
The main engine successfully completed its endurance test in methanol mode on the first attempt, a rarity for new-build dual-fuel transitions.
The Strategic Shift to Methanol
The delivery of the MONTE CRISTO signals a broadening of the green fuel market. While LNG has dominated the dual-fuel sector for the past decade, methanol is gaining rapid traction due to its ease of handling at ambient temperatures and the growing availability of “green” bio-methanol.
