Nantong CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering Co., Ltd. (CIMC SOE) successfully secured an order for liquefied ammonia fuel tanks destined for the world’s first ammonia-powered bulk carrier. This milestone marks a significant achievement for CIMC SOE in the fuel tank product domain and underscores the global shipping industry’s commitment to a greener future.
The fuel tanks will be installed on the world’s first ammonia-fueled bulk carrier, currently under construction by Qingdao Beihai Shipyard. Qingdao SunRui, the total package supplier for the ammonia fuel gas system, has partnered with CIMC SOE again, following their successful collaboration on a dual-fuel bulk carrier LNG fuel tank project. Together, they will ensure the smooth delivery of this groundbreaking global project. The vessels will feature WinGD‘s pioneering ammonia engine, ammonia fuel gas system, and CIMC SOE’s liquefied ammonia fuel tanks, achieving zero-carbon emission propulsion through clean fuel.
For this project, CIMC SOE has selected high-pressure cylindrical tanks with a geometric capacity of 3,000 cubic meters each, measuring 31 meters in length and 12 meters in diameter, featuring hemispherical heads. The order includes twelve 3,000 cubic meter ammonia fuel tanks for six sets of vessels, all autonomously designed and constructed by CIMC SOE.
CIMC SOE, a leading player in the global fuel tank industry, excels in tank design, construction, and project management. The company offers customized solutions for maritime applications, leading the global market share for C-Type fuel tanks and possessing robust technical expertise in B-Type and A-Type tanks. Currently, CIMC SOE is also constructing China’s largest 13,000 cubic meter B-Type tank and a 40,000 cubic meter A-Type tank for MGC use. Supported by a skilled team, CIMC SOE remains dedicated to developing high-quality vessels and liquid tanks that meet international environmental standards.
As the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) targets for drastically reducing ship carbon emissions draw closer, ammonia as marine fuel has emerged as an increasingly popular alternative among shipbuilders and shipowners. Liquefied ammonia, known for its clean and efficient energy profile, holds significant promise for the shipping industry. Unlike traditional heavy oil, ammonia fuel combustion produces only water and nitrogen as byproducts, making it one of the most environmentally friendly marine fuels available. This contributes significantly to reducing the shipping sector’s carbon footprint and promoting sustainable development.
The ammonia fuel tank order signifies a significant breakthrough for CIMC SOE in green shipping and underscores its commitment to driving high-quality growth within the industry. Looking forward, CIMC SOE will continue leveraging its expertise in the fuel tank sector to contribute to the green and sustainable development of the global shipping industry.
