Athens, Greece | January 06, 2025 – Capital Clean Energy Carriers Corp. (CCEC) has officially entered a new chapter in maritime history with the delivery of the Active, the world’s first 22,000 cubic meter (cbm) low-pressure liquid CO2 (LCO2) carrier.
Built by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) in South Korea, the vessel is the first of a four-ship series designed to underpin the global transition toward large-scale carbon transportation. The Active recently gained international acclaim, winning the Lloyd’s List Greek Shipping 2025 “Ship of the Year” award for its revolutionary tank technology and role in enabling future carbon solutions.

A Revolutionary Multi-Gas Strategy
While the Active is engineered for the emerging LCO2 market, its design offers unparalleled commercial flexibility. The vessel is a “multi-gas” carrier, capable of transporting:
- Liquid CO2 (LCO2)
- Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)
- Ammonia (NH3)
- Selected Petrochemicals
This versatility allows CCEC to deploy the vessel in conventional handy semi-refrigerated gas markets during the early stages of CCUS infrastructure development. In fact, the Active will begin its career immediately under a six-month time charter transporting LPG for a major energy trading company.
Engineering for the CCUS Era
The vessel utilizes next-generation low-pressure technology (operating at approximately 7-8 bar and -55°C). This allows for the use of larger, more efficient Type C bi-lobe tanks that maximize cargo volume while maintaining structural integrity, a feat difficult to achieve with high-pressure designs.
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global carbon capture capacity is projected to soar from today’s 50 million tonnes per year to 430 million tonnes by 2030. CCEC’s investment in this specialized tonnage positions the company as a first-mover in a sector where supply remains extremely scarce.
Building the Future: Strategic Optionality and Financial Resilience
The acquisition was supported by a $48.9 million ECA-backed loan and $29.4 million in cash. Jerry Kalogiratos, CEO of Capital Clean Energy Carriers Corp. (CCEC), noted:
“The delivery of Active marks another important milestone in CCEC’s development. This unique LCO2/multi-gas vessel series strategically positions CCEC to support the emerging LCO2 transportation market, while offering the flexibility to trade across established gas segments. This embedded optionality supports cash flow resilience across cycles and reflects our disciplined approach to capital allocation as we continue to build and expand our energy-transition shipping platform.”
