By joining the neutral, data-driven pooling platform, the heavy-lift leader aims to optimize decarbonization costs and leverage economies of scale alongside industry majors like Neste and Spliethoff. Helsinki | March 25, 2026 – In a strategic move to navigate the tightening net of European environmental regulations, BBC Chartering, a global leader in the ocean transportation of heavy lifts and project cargo, has officially entered into a partnership with Ahti Pool.
The agreement targets the complex requirements of the FuelEU Maritime regulation. Under the terms of the deal, BBC Chartering will leverage the pool’s collective compliance mechanisms, purchasing 5,000 tCO2e (tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent) through the platform to cover the obligations of several vessels within its extensive fleet.
Strategic Compliance in a New Regulatory Era
The FuelEU Maritime regulation, designed to ramp up the use of renewable and low-carbon fuels in shipping, presents a significant operational hurdle for individual shipowners. Ahti Pool addresses this by offering a neutral, cost-efficient pooling solution that is not tethered to any single compliance technology or fuel type.
By aggregating a diverse range of vessels, the pool allows members to share compliance obligations. This “strength in numbers” approach enables participants to benefit from economies of scale and a proprietary emissions-management platform. According to data provided by Ahti, a typical vessel is expected to require between 150-200 tCO2e to meet its compliance targets for the 2026 calendar year.
The Ahti Pool model functions by:
- Transferring Savings: Excess emissions credits from over-complying ships (those using high levels of green fuel) are transferred to ships needing additional credits.
- Avoiding Penalties: The collective nature of the pool helps operators bypass the steep financial penalties associated with non-compliance.
- Financial Upside: Members can potentially monetize their use of renewable green fuels through the pooling mechanism.
Ahti Pool currently manages hundreds of vessels and administers more than €100 million in emissions exposure for high-profile maritime entities including Van Weelde Group, Bore, Spliethoff, Stenersen, and Neste.
