Axpo Group, Switzerland’s largest energy producer and an international leader in energy trading, has marked a significant achievement in its liquefied natural gas (LNG) operations with the delivery of 100 LNG cargoes to Europe in less than four years. This milestone underscores the company’s growing role in the LNG sector, which continues to be a critical component of Axpo’s Trading & Sales business. By providing a secure energy supply, Axpo supports both domestic and international customers, particularly in Switzerland.

A Milestone of 100 LNG Cargoes Delivered

From January 2020 to September 2024, Axpo successfully delivered 100 LNG cargoes to various European terminals. The bulk of these deliveries went to terminals in Spain, France, Italy, and Portugal, where Axpo has solidified its presence. In total, the company has transported a remarkable 76.07 terawatt hours (TWh) of LNG, which is enough to power approximately 4.7 million homes for an entire year.

In the 2023/24 financial year alone, Axpo imported 25 LNG cargoes, amounting to 16.2 TWh. This volume is equivalent to the annual gas consumption of one million homes across Europe, demonstrating Axpo’s key contribution to regional energy security during a time of growing demand for cleaner energy solutions.

Commitment to Energy Transition

Domenico de Luca, Head of Trading & Sales at Axpo, emphasized the company’s ongoing success in the natural gas and LNG sectors, stating, “Axpo’s natural gas and LNG activities have continued to thrive over the past years and play an important role in providing a secure energy supply to our customers. Gas is a key bridging fuel, providing the diversification needed during the energy transition as renewable energy technologies gain scale.”

A Sustainable Future with LNG

Axpo has been involved in the gas trading and transportation sector across Europe for nearly 20 years. More than a decade ago, the company expanded into LNG activities, which have become an integral part of its energy portfolio. Axpo serves a diverse range of customers, from small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to large energy-intensive industrial clients, solidifying its position as a reliable energy partner.

Expanding LNG Bunkering Operations

In addition to its success in the natural gas and LNG trading sectors, Axpo is now expanding its LNG operations into bunkering. The company is chartering small-scale LNG vessels to facilitate LNG bunkering, a process that allows for efficient and cost-effective ship-to-ship and ship-to-truck transfers of LNG. As LNG becomes an increasingly popular and cleaner alternative to traditional marine fuels, Axpo’s bunkering activities are expected to play a key role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime industry.

LNG bunkering has emerged as an essential growth area for Axpo, offering a sustainable and competitive solution for the shipping industry. The company’s commitment to LNG highlights its dedication to advancing cleaner energy alternatives and supporting the maritime sector’s transition to more environmentally friendly fuels.
