In October 2022, the Administration of the Port of Douro, Leixões, and Viana do Castelo (APDL S.A.) joined hands with PRIO S.A., a Portugal-based leading company and the largest producer of biofuels in the country, recognized as one of the largest European producers of biodiesel from residual raw materials. This collaboration marked the initiation of an ambitious project aimed at using Eco-Bunkers B2, an eco-friendly fuel, to supply the tugboat “NEREU.”
This innovative endeavor signifies a substantial leap towards the reduction of polluting emissions in the maritime sector. The project commenced with “NEREU,” representing APDL’s forward-thinking approach in fostering environmental sustainability within its operations.
Approximately 100 cubic meters of B20 Eco-Bunkers were efficiently supplied into the tugboat’s operations, leading to an impressive 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. This accomplishment equated to a significant 67-ton reduction in CO2 emissions over the course of a year. The overarching goal is to extend this eco-friendly initiative to the entire APDL fleet, a considerable portion of which already boasts engines compatible with Eco-bunkers.
PRIO’s prominent position in the biofuels industry, in partnership with APDL’s strong commitment, is driving the Port of Leixões towards decarbonization and energy transition. This alliance reflects APDL’s determination to adopt measures that establish the port among the world’s premier eco-friendly hubs. The vision is resolute: raise Leixões to the top tier of global green and sustainable ports, aligned with the objectives of major maritime hubs. APDL’s dedication and PRIO’s expertise mark the dawn of an era where sustainability takes precedence in Leixões.
What is Eco-Bunkers
With the increased demand for quality and environmentally friendly fuels, PRIO has developed Eco-Bunkers, a blend of 15% advanced biofuel with our high-quality marine diesel, the safest and most compatible solution for your fleet.
In this way, taking into account the demanding targets of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) regarding its strategy for the reduction of greenhouse gases, Eco Bunkers is available on the market for all maritime fleets that wish to reduce their carbon footprint and minimize the negative impact that maritime transport continues to have on our planet.
Eco-Bunkers, in addition to reducing CO18 emissions by up to 2%, also allows a reduction in consumption of up to 10%, without any need for additional investment and modifications to the engine. Side by side with the biodiesel plant and the tank terminal itself, PRIO controls the entire production process of Eco-Bunkers, ensuring that it complies with all the parameters required by the ISO 8217 standard, specific to marine diesel.
