Amsus Picks bound4blue eSail System

Amasus, a leading player in the European shortsea, bulk, general cargo, offshore, and heavy lift segments, has announced a significant new contract with Spain’s bound4blue to install the world’s largest suction sail system on one of its general cargo vessels. This groundbreaking agreement comes after Amasus’s successful experience with bound4blue’s technology on the Eems Traveller, which has been operating with two 17-meter eSAILs® since July 2023.

Innovative Wind-Assisted Propulsion System

Under the terms of the latest contract, Amasus will retrofit a 22-meter eSAIL® (suction sail) onto a 90-meter vessel with a deadweight tonnage (dwt) of 2,876. The installation will take place at Astander Shipyard in Santander and is scheduled for mid-2025. This new setup is poised to set a benchmark in the industry as the largest suction sail system installed on a general cargo vessel to date.

The eSAIL® technology utilizes an autonomous system that enhances propulsive efficiency by dragging air across its aerodynamic surface. This innovative mechanism significantly reduces fuel consumption, operational expenses, and emissions, thereby supporting regulatory compliance within the shipping sector.

Positive Results Drive New Contract

The decision to pursue a second contract with bound4blue was influenced by the impressive results observed on the Eems Traveller. A spokesperson from Amasus remarked that the “compelling nature of the benefits” led the company to deepen its partnership with bound4blue.

The performance of the eSAILs® on the Eems Traveller is currently being validated by Lloyd’s Register, with results expected to underscore the commercial and environmental advantages of integrating wind propulsion technology into Amasus’s operational strategy.

Commitment to Sustainability and Innovation

Amasus’s dedication to fostering a more efficient and sustainable shipping industry is reflected in this partnership. The company recognizes the importance of exploring new technological solutions to enhance its operations. “The decision to install the eSAILs® on the Eems Traveller was a tangible demonstration of that mindset, and we’ve been thrilled by the results,” noted an Amasus representative.

Growing Adoption of eSAIL® Technology

The contract with Amasus marks a milestone for bound4blue, demonstrating the increasing acceptance of their DNV Type Approved wind-assisted propulsion system. José Miguel, CEO and co-founder of bound4blue, commented on the significance of securing a second agreement with Amasus, stating that it reinforces the technology’s status as a “proven, cost-effective, simple, and reliable enabler for greener, more profitable shipping operations.”

The increasing trend towards wind-assisted propulsion systems is evident, with various shipowners and operators, including Eastern Pacific Shipping, Odfjell, Marflet Marine, and Louis Dreyfus Company, having engaged with bound4blue in the past year.

With the rising popularity of wind propulsion solutions, bound4blue anticipates a significant uptick in adoption rates among shipowners and operators looking to leverage the benefits of eSAIL® technology. The anticipated publication of performance data from Lloyd’s Register will further bolster confidence in these innovative solutions.
