In a groundbreaking development within the maritime world, two industry leaders, AES Corporation and Seaspan have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on the development of the LNG Bunkering services in the Panama Canal Region.

In a significant breakthrough for the regional Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) industry, AES and shipowner Seaspan are teaming up to drive sustainable energy solutions in the maritime industry. The collaboration has as its main objective to offer bunkering services with (LNG) to maritime transport vessels crossing the Panama Canal and explore similar opportunities in regional markets.

AES is working on the expansion of its LNG terminal in Colon, Panama, which will include new LNG refueling infrastructure on LNG carriers. In partnership with Seaspan, they are planning the commercialization of LNG as a marine fuel from the second half of 2024, marking an important milestone for a more environmentally friendly hydrocarbon.

The Ship Loading Facility, an integral part of this initiative, is slated to commence operations in November of this year. It will offer a comprehensive range of services, including LNG carrier cooling, temporary storage, reloading, as well as bunkering and regional distribution reloading.

This MoU was formalized during the 3rd International Global LNG Forum held in Cartagena, Colombia, and witnessed the presence of key figures in the industry. Miguel Bolinaga, President of AES Panama, and Ian McIver, President of Seaspan Energy, alongside Freddy Obando, Regional Vice President of LNG for AES, were among the prominent attendees, highlighting the significance of this collaborative endeavor in shaping the future of maritime energy solutions.

AES, a global leader in sustainable energy solutions, has been at the forefront of transforming the energy landscape for years. With a strong commitment to reducing carbon emissions and embracing eco-friendly alternatives, AES has made significant strides in the LNG sector. Now, they’re taking a giant leap forward in partnership with Seaspan.

Seaspan, a renowned Canadian shipowner with a rich maritime history, brings extensive experience and a deep-rooted commitment to sustainability. Their fleet of vessels spans the globe, and they are dedicated to not only transporting goods efficiently but also reducing their carbon footprint.
