ABB Wallenius Marine OVERSEA TernTank

Danish tanker operator Tärntank is set to embark on an innovative trial of the OVERSEA services, a collaborative initiative between ABB and Wallenius Marine. The trial, which will cover Tärntank’s fleet of six vessels, aims to explore new opportunities for enhancing operational performance across various critical systems, including the engine, hull, propeller, and auxiliary systems. Additionally, the trial will focus on forecasting and monitoring the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII), a key metric for assessing the environmental impact of shipping operations. Shore-based support expertise will also be provided as needed throughout the trial period.

OVERSEA: A Comprehensive Digital Decision-Support Service

OVERSEA is a digital decision-support service designed to help ship owners, managers, and operators improve vessel operational performance. The collaboration between ABB and Wallenius Marine combines ABB’s extensive expertise in ship technologies, particularly through the ABB Ability™ Genix Industrial Analytics and AI IoT platform, with Wallenius Marine’s decades of experience in ship management and vessel performance management. The result is a service that aims to reduce fuel consumption, operational costs, and emissions while enhancing reliability and safety.

OVERSEA Services

For Tärntank, the trial represents an opportunity to evaluate a service offering that goes beyond just providing tools. OVERSEA’s comprehensive service includes support from center experts who will guide Tärntank through the full improvement cycle, making it particularly well-suited for small to medium-sized organizations looking to improve their vessel operational performance in a structured and effective manner.

Focus Areas of the Trial

The initial trials will concentrate on the capabilities of OVERSEA in several key areas:

  • Main Engine Performance: Monitoring and optimizing the main engine’s efficiency to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
  • Hull and Propeller Performance: Assessing the hull’s condition and the propeller’s effectiveness to ensure optimal hydrodynamic performance.
  • Auxiliary Systems: Evaluating the performance of auxiliary systems, which play a crucial role in the overall energy efficiency of the vessel.
  • CII Operational Performance: Forecasting and monitoring the Carbon Intensity Indicator to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and to identify opportunities for further emissions reductions.

Claes Möller, CEO of Tärntank Ship Management AB, expressed his enthusiasm for the trial, stating, “We look forward to our vessel crews and office-based staff collaborating with the OVERSEA Fleet Support Center experts on a common platform to turn insights into actions and further enhance vessel performance.”

Collaborative Approach to Performance Management

Niklas Sundén, Commercial Manager of OVERSEA, highlighted the collaborative nature of the service, noting that conventional solutions often leave customers to interpret data and determine actions independently. In contrast, OVERSEA offers a more integrated approach, where onboard crews and shore-side personnel work alongside OVERSEA’s Center experts to manage the process and workflows. This collaborative effort is designed to ensure that performance insights are effectively translated into actionable improvements.

Significance for the Tanker Industry

The trial of OVERSEA services by Tärntank underscores the potential of this innovative solution for the tanker industry, which consists of approximately 10,000 vessels and represents one-third of the global fleet. By subscribing to OVERSEA’s support services, tanker owners and operators can leverage advanced digital solutions and expert collaboration to enhance their operational performance, reduce emissions, and achieve greater sustainability.
