Berg Propulsion is expanding its global footprint by opening a dedicated office in Mumbai on January 1, 2027, to capitalize on India’s accelerating shipbuilding surge. Led by Amrita Singh and Prasenjit Roy, the new hub will strengthen relationships with major yards like GRSE and MDL while driving local demand for advanced controllable-pitch propeller systems and green hybrid propulsion. Beyond supporting domestic commercial and defense sectors, including Navy and Coast Guard expansion, the office will establish a regional service network across Mumbai, Kochi, and Visakhapatnam, with potential to support neighboring markets like Sri Lanka.
Hönö and Mumbai | September 17, 2026 – Propulsion systems provider Berg Propulsion has announced a major strategic expansion into South Asia, confirming plans to open a dedicated office in Mumbai starting 1 January 2027. The move underscores the company’s deepening participation in India’s expanding maritime sector, capitalizing on a national shipbuilding surge across both commercial and defense segments.
The new Mumbai hub will serve as a central contact point for Berg’s activities across India, strengthening existing relationships with major shipbuilders, including Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), and Chowgule Shipyard.
Leadership and Local Expertise
The new office will be led by Amrita Singh, currently Berg Propulsion Account Manager for New Sales, who will assume the role of General Manager. Singh will be supported by Prasenjit Roy, a former Commander in the Indian Navy and former Programme Manager for Commercial Shipbuilding at GRSE. Roy brings extensive equipment commissioning experience that will directly bolster Berg’s quality assurance and technical support services in the region.
Singh and Roy have already established a successful track record collaborating on the supply of Berg Propulsion packages for two 33.55-meter electric tugs currently under construction at KMEW Group’s Mumbai facility.
“Our focus will be on identifying and supporting projects where Berg solutions add value, enhance efficiency and reduce emissions,” said Amrita Singh, incoming General Manager for India. “Working closely with customers and our yard partners, we look forward to matching our systems, service and support with the opportunities available in this growing market.”
Capitalizing on Green Propulsion and Naval Expansion
India’s maritime market is experiencing a wave of momentum driven by both state-backed and private investments.
“Both the Navy and Coast Guard have significant expansion programmes, with opportunities for the type of controllable-pitch propeller [CPP] systems Berg offers at the heart of almost every platform,” noted Prasenjit Roy.
Indian shipyards are increasingly turning their attention toward sustainable technologies, showing high interest in hybrid configurations, variable speed drives, and advanced CPP systems.
“Proximity is critical in this market, where the next five years will see optimized efficiency transition from the market differentiator it is today into a minimum requirement,” Roy added.
Expanding the Footprint and Service Network
Backed by robust private investment and government backing for sustainable shipping initiatives, Berg intends to aggressively grow its business footprint across the tug, dredger, and offshore support vessel (OSV) newbuild segments. To ensure comprehensive lifecycle support, the company plans to establish a network of trained service agents in key maritime clusters, including Mumbai, Kochi, and Visakhapatnam, where the majority of its customers vessels operate.
The expansion will also focus on talent acquisition and regional reach. According to Singh, the company will recruit skilled local talent and implement specialized training programs to build long-term expertise. Furthermore, the Mumbai office holds the strategic potential to extend technical support and services to customers in neighboring South Asian markets, such as Sri Lanka.
