St1 Biokraft has launched its first maritime supply operation in the Baltic Sea, delivering BioLNG to power Destination Gotland‘s passenger ferries this summer. Executed in cooperation with Avenir in the Port of Visby, the deal introduces domestic, Swedish-produced liquefied biogas to the shipping sector, paving the way for low-emission transport lines.
Stockholm, Sweden | June 22, 2026 – Nordic biomethane leader St1 Biokraft has officially entered the Baltic Sea marine bunkering market, securing a landmark contract to supply liquefied biogas (BioLNG) to Swedish ferry operator Destination Gotland.
The agreement covers fuel deliveries during the busy summer season and the high-profile Almedalen Week 2026. This marks the first time St1 Biokraft has supplied fuel to Destination Gotland’s fleet and represents a key logistical milestone: the company’s inaugural commercial delivery of domestic, Swedish-produced biogas into the maritime sector.
Powering Crossings with Regional Biofuels
The initial fuel volume supplied by St1 Biokraft is sufficient to power approximately 30 one-way crossings between Visby (on the island of Gotland) and Nynäshamn (on the Swedish mainland).
While the total BioLNG delivery consists of a blended regional volume, a designated portion is directly traced to Swedish production facilities. This domestic share is equivalent to the energy requirements of roughly 10 single crossings.
Sohrab Moshiri, Head of Sales at St1 Biokraft, highlighted the long-term regional production goals behind the deal:
“We are pleased to begin this new collaboration with Destination Gotland, and it is particularly positive that part of the volume is Swedish-produced. This is a milestone for us, as it is the first time we can supply biogas to shipping in the Baltic Sea. Swedish production capacity is still being built up, but our ambition is to increase our own capacity so that, in future, we can supply only Swedish gas to this type of customer.”
Logistical Execution and Port Bunkering Mechanics
To execute the delivery under tight maritime schedules, St1 Biokraft partnered with small-scale LNG and biogas logistics specialist Avenir. Avenir handles the physical bunkering mechanics directly in the Port of Visby, ensuring a seamless drop-in fuel supply to the vessels.
Produced completely from recycled organic waste and societal residual materials, BioLNG acts as a direct substitute for liquefied natural gas (LNG). This allows ship operators to immediately reduce their greenhouse gas emissions without needing structural modifications to existing onboard cryogenic engine systems.
Driving Compliance on Key Baltic Routes
The acquisition of high-volume bio-bunkers is a critical operational move for Destination Gotland as shipping lines face stricter regional carbon accounting under the European Union’s updated maritime frameworks.
Adam Jacobsson, Sales and Marketing Manager at Destination Gotland, noted the value of local sourcing:
“We are continuously working to reduce emissions from our operations, and we are pleased to have purchased large volumes of BioLNG ahead of Almedalen Week and the summer season. It is especially positive that a large share of the order is Swedish-produced, thereby contributing to a local supply for our energy needs.”
