A Landmark Year for Maritime Electrification
Measured by USD value, this contract represents a historic milestone for Corvus Energy, concluding a year of record-high revenue and order intake. The seven identical Loch-class vessels are part of the Scottish Government’s Small Vessel Replacement Program (SVRP), a strategic initiative designed to modernize the aging fleet and decarbonize transport links across Scotland’s island communities.
“It’s truly remarkable to witness seven identical ferries being constructed at the same shipyard,” said Stein Ruben Larsen, Senior Vice President of Sales at Corvus Energy. “This project is significant not only because of its scale but also because of the outstanding collaboration we’ve had with the designer, the shipyard, and the integrator throughout the entire process.“
Technical Specifications: The Dolphin NxtGen Advantage
Each of the seven car and passenger ferries will be equipped with a 5.7 MWh Corvus Dolphin NxtGen Energy Storage System (ESS), bringing the total program capacity to 40 MWh.
The Dolphin NxtGen was selected for its industry-leading lightweight architecture and safety standards, which are critical for the demanding routes of Scotland’s west coast. The delivery schedule is phased to align with the shipbuilding timeline:
- 2026: First battery system delivery.
- 2027: Three systems delivered.
- 2028: Final three systems delivered.
The vessels are a product of intensive international cooperation, with concept designs from naValue (Germany), basic design by LMG Marin (Norway), and electrical integration managed by ABB.
Deep Dive: Decarbonizing the Scottish West Coast
The new ferries will serve vital routes, including Colintraive–Rhubodach, Iona–Fionnphort, and Tobermory–Kilchoan. By operating on 100% electric power, these vessels will achieve zero-emission transits, significantly reducing the environmental footprint of the Scottish ferry network.
Trusted Partners in Zero-Emission Newbuilds
This contract marks a massive expansion of a long-standing collaboration between Remontowa Shipbuilding and Corvus Energy that began in 2018. Including these seven newbuilds, the two companies have now partnered on nearly 20 joint projects, spanning both fully electric ferries and hybrid offshore vessels.
Michal Jaguszewski, Commercial Director at Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A., emphasized the reliability of the partnership “Our collaboration has proven reliable through multiple projects, and Corvus’ lightweight ESS technology plays an important role in achieving the high environmental standards required for CMAL’s new ferries.”
A Record Year for Corvus
The deal concludes a historic year for the Norwegian firm. Fredrik Witte, CEO of Corvus Energy, highlighted the firm’s growth trajectory “This contract marks the conclusion of a fantastic year for Corvus Energy, with record-high order intake and revenue. As we look ahead to a market in strong growth, we are excited to support the yard in delivering these state-of-the-art electric ferries.”
