TT-Line GreenShip 2 order placed

LÜBECK, Germany | December 22, 2025 – Baltic ferry market leader TT-Line has officially signed a contract with China Merchants Jinling Shipyard for the construction of its next-generation RoPax vessel, dubbed Green Ship 2.0. This milestone reinforces TT-Line’s commitment to a long-term sustainability strategy and builds upon the operational success of its predecessor vessels.

Technical Evolution: LNG-Hybrid & Shore Power

The Green Ship 2.0 represents a significant technical upgrade from the current Nils Holgersson and Peter Pan (delivered in 2022). Measuring approximately 240 metres in length with a capacity for 1,000 passengers, the vessel will feature a state-of-the-art LNG-hybrid propulsion system.

In a major leap toward zero-emission port operations, the new ship will integrate a shore power-fed battery solution. This allows the vessel to charge its battery banks while docked, enabling completely emission-free stays in port and assisting in peak-shaving during voyages.

The Green Ship 2.0 is not just a new vessel; it is a technical benchmark for the Baltic Sea,” said TT-Line. “By combining LNG with advanced battery technology, we are underlining our ambition to lead the industry toward a zero-emission future.”

Optimized for Efficiency and Comfort

The project continues the long-standing partnership between TT-Line and China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Nanjing). The 2.0 design focuses on three key pillars:

  • Operational Efficiency: Refined hull lines and optimized hydrodynamics to reduce fuel consumption.
  • Environmental Performance: Use of bio-LNG capabilities and energy-efficient HVAC systems with heat recovery.
  • Passenger Experience: Newly designed “Eco-Mode” cabins and expanded outdoor areas totaling over 1,200 m².

A Pioneer in the Baltic

TT-Line has been at the forefront of maritime environmentalism since 2015. Their strategy is multifaceted:

  • Emissions Reduction: The current fleet already utilizes flue gas desulfurization (scrubbers) and low-sulfur fuel (0.1%) to meet strict IMO SECA requirements.
  • Infrastructure: The Green Ship series provides 32 charging stations for passengers’ electric vehicles, supporting the transition to green mobility on land and at sea.
  • Network: Linking Germany (Travemünde, Rostock), Poland (Świnoujście), and Lithuania (Klaipėda) with Sweden (Trelleborg), TT-Line manages up to 18 departures daily, making its decarbonization efforts critical for Northern European trade corridors.
