The Port of Antwerp-Bruges has announced an ambitious plan to modernize the infrastructure of Zweedse Kaai in Zeebrugge, focusing on sustainability and improved quality of life for local residents and cruise passengers. This initiative aligns with the port’s long-term goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050 and marks a significant milestone in the region’s efforts to reduce emissions and enhance operational efficiency.

Shore Power Facilities: A First for Zeebrugge

The highlight of the transformation is the installation of shore power facilities at Zweedse Kaai, making it the first port in Zeebrugge to offer this service for cruise ships. This innovation will enable vessels to connect to green electricity from the high-voltage grid, allowing them to switch off their diesel generators while docked.

This transition is expected to cut CO2 emissions by 98% and particulate matter emissions by 95%. Construction of the first shore power installation is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2025, with the initial facility set to be operational by 2027, well ahead of the European mandate that requires such systems by 2030. The port plans to expand the capacity to accommodate two cruise ships by the end of the decade.

Enhanced Passenger and Environmental Experience

In addition to shore power, the Port Authority will invest in modernizing the cruise terminal and redeveloping the surrounding quay area. This includes a new terminal building and improved infrastructure to streamline passenger flows. The design eliminates the need for buses to transport passengers between ships and terminals, reducing both logistical hurdles and environmental impact.

Future bus movements will be routed directly via a new ramp on Kustlaan, minimizing disruption to the local area. The project also plans to convert portions of the quay into green spaces with hiking and biking trails, re-purposing old railway lines to enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors.

The revamped terminal and green spaces aim to attract more cruise tourists, boosting local businesses and improving connectivity between the port and the residential areas around Rederskaai. The study for these enhancements will commence in 2025, with construction expected between 2027 and 2028. The new terminal is slated for completion by spring 2029.

Funding and Support

The Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF) has allocated a European grant of €3.2 million to support the shore power project. Additional funding opportunities for terminal modernization are under consideration to ensure the project meets its sustainability and operational goals.

Dirk De fauw, Mayor of Bruges and Vice Chairman of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges Board of Directors, emphasized the dual benefits of sustainability and community enhancement:

“This master plan marks the beginning of an important new chapter for the port of Zeebrugge and the city of Bruges. The transformation of Zweedse Kaai not only encompasses advances in our infrastructure, but is also an important step towards a more sustainable future. Converting part of the terminal and the old railway line into green space with hiking and biking trails will boost both the quality of life in the area and the local economy.”

Rob Smeets, COO of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, highlighted the port’s role as a sustainability leader:

“This project is all about preparing our port for the future. Our mission is clear: the Port of Zeebrugge must not only be an economic engine, but also a pioneer in sustainability and efficiency. The planned infrastructure improvements are designed to optimise passenger flows and reduce inconvenience to local residents, contributing to a more sustainable and pleasant port environment.”

This transformation of Zweedse Kaai is a bold step toward achieving these goals, enhancing both the port’s capabilities and the community’s quality of life.
