On November 30, China Marine Bunker (PetroChina) Co., Ltd. (CHIMBUSCO) achieved a major milestone in sustainable marine fuel solutions by successfully completing its first methanol fuel bunkering operation for COSCO Shipping. The operation took place at Taizhou Sanfu Ship Engineering Co., Ltd., where CHIMBUSCO Jiangsu supplied 79.5 tons of methanol fuel to the 1,300 TEU methanol dual-fuel container vessel NCL VESTLAND.
This landmark operation underscores CHIMBUSCO’s ability to supply methanol fuel on a routine basis and represents a significant step forward in the adoption of alternative low-carbon fuels in the maritime industry.
Rigorous Preparations for Safe and Efficient Operations
To ensure the smooth execution of this operation, CHIMBUSCO Jiangsu collaborated extensively with Taizhou Sanfu Ship Engineering Co., Ltd. The teams worked together to refine methanol bunkering procedures, establish comprehensive safety protocols, and develop a robust contingency plan. A detailed methanol bunkering operations manual was also prepared to guide the process.
On the day of the bunkering, both parties conducted meticulous inspections and audits to confirm that all preparations met safety standards. A designated “work exclusion zone” was established at the pier, and on-site monitoring personnel ensured a safe and secure environment throughout the operation.

The operation was carried out using a mobile methanol bunkering skid jointly developed by CHIMBUSCO Jiangsu and Lianyungang Ocean Fluid Handling Equipment Co., Ltd. The shore-to-ship methanol fuel transfer, which took 2.5 hours, was executed flawlessly. Representatives from Lianyungang Ocean Fluid Handling Equipment Co., Ltd. and Yangzhou COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry observed the operation, which showcased the professionalism of CHIMBUSCO’s team, the advanced capabilities of its equipment, and the precision of its processes.
The shipyard and the vessel’s owner expressed high praise for the operation, noting the smooth execution and the cutting-edge technology employed. The shipowner also conveyed strong interest in continuing to use CHIMBUSCO’s methanol bunkering services after the vessel’s sea trials and before its official voyage.
