Fjord1, a leading ferry operator in Norway, has awarded Norwegian Electric Systems (NES), a subsidiary of HAV Group ASA, a contract to deliver two onshore charging stations for four autonomous, zero-emission ferries operating the Lavik-Oppedal crossing on the west coast of Norway. The Lavik-Oppedal ferry route spans 5.6 kilometers across the Sognefjord and is a key part of Fjord1’s efforts to move towards more environmentally friendly ferry operations.
As part of the agreement, NES will supply two complete, containerized charging stations for the ferries, which will be installed at the ferry terminals in Lavik and Oppedal. These stations will include transformers, switchboards, a control system, a data collection system, and the charging plugs that connect the stations to the ferries. The charging stations are designed to quickly recharge the vessels, bringing them close to full charge in approximately ten minutes while docked at the port.
Odd Bjarte Johnsen, Fjord1’s project manager, emphasized the importance of the agreement in advancing their sustainability goals. “Fjord1 is very pleased to enter this agreement with Norwegian Electric Systems for the delivery of the charging stations to the Lavik-Oppedal ferry crossing. This partnership represents one of many important steps towards more environmentally friendly ferry operations,” Johnsen stated. The company has had positive experiences with similar deliveries in the past and values its ongoing collaboration with NES.
The delivery of these charging stations is scheduled for 2026, with NES overseeing the project from its headquarters in Bergen, Norway. The company has not disclosed the value of the contract but noted that the charging stations will be specially developed to accommodate the autonomous functions of the ferries.
Siv Remøy-Vangen, managing director at NES, highlighted the significance of this project, saying, “We have delivered multiple onshore charging stations in the past, so this is highly familiar territory for NES. However, these charging stations will be further developed to meet the autonomous operations of the ferries, with some autonomous functions integrated into the system.”
The Lavik-Oppedal ferry project marks a major milestone for Norwegian Electric Systems, as it represents their third contract for the same ferry line. Earlier this year, in March, NES was contracted by the Turkish shipbuilder Tersan to provide system integration services for the power systems, automation, and bridge design for the four ferries. In May, Fjord1 also contracted NES to develop systems for the automation of vessel functions and autonomous navigation.
Being awarded all three contracts related to the Lavik-Oppedal ferry operation underscores the growing recognition of NES as a key partner in this ambitious green transport project. “To be awarded a third out of a possible three contracts for the Lavik-Oppedal ferries is a fantastic result. This project represents the future of ferry transport, and we are honored to be involved as a key cooperation partner for Fjord1,” Remøy-Vangen added.
Furthermore, NES’s sister company, HAV Design, has been contracted to provide ship design and engineering packages for the vessels. Both NES and HAV Design are subsidiaries of HAV Group ASA, which is listed on the Euronext Growth Oslo under the ticker code HAV.
