China Classification Society (CCS) recently awarded an Approval in Principle (AIP) certificate to Shanghai Ship and Shipping Research Institute (SSSRI) for its groundbreaking “Hull Monitoring System (HMS),” “Hull Monitoring System for Ships Operating in Ice (HMSOI),” and “Intelligent Hull System (IHS).” The certification marks a significant milestone in the advancement of ship monitoring technologies, aimed at enhancing maritime safety, operational efficiency, and environmental sustainability.

The award ceremony, held by CCS Shanghai Rules & Research Institute, was attended by prominent industry leaders, including Cui Yuwei, Director of CCS Shanghai Rules & Research Institute, and Wu Zhongdai, Deputy General Manager of Shanghai Ship and Shipping Research Institute.

Transformative Capabilities of the Systems
  • Hull Monitoring System (HMS):
This system enables real-time monitoring of a ship’s structural health, including ship motion, fatigue strength, and yield strength. By providing early warnings of high-risk stress levels, HMS aids in timely and effective decision-making for crews, ensuring safer voyages and reduced maintenance risks.
  • Hull Monitoring System for Ships Operating in Ice (HMSOI):
Designed specifically for ice-navigation, HMSOI integrates capabilities such as ice-zone structural monitoring, ice-induced vibration analysis, and ice navigation safety assessments. These features ensure enhanced safety and operational efficiency for vessels operating in harsh Arctic and Antarctic conditions.
  • Intelligent Hull System (IHS):
IHS incorporates life cycle management of hull structures, offering real-time monitoring and decision support throughout a vessel’s operational lifespan. This intelligent system helps reduce operating costs, extend service life, and enhance ship efficiency.
A Collaborative Success

The certification process was based on stringent standards outlined in the “Rules for Classification of Sea-Going Steel Ships,” “Rules for Intelligent Ships,” and “Guidelines for Hull Monitoring and Assistant Decision-Making System for Operations in Ice.” CCS collaborated closely with China COSCO Shipping Corporation Limited to overcome technical challenges, leveraging advanced research and development capabilities to ensure compliance with international standards.
