Chevron Marine Lubricants, a subsidiary of Chevron Corporation, has announced the expansion of its supply network to include Port Elizabeth, South Africa. This strategic move enhances Chevron’s global distribution capabilities and bolsters supply reliability for vessels navigating the longer routes to avoid conflict zones.

Strengthening supply in southern waters

Located on the western perimeter of Algoa Bay, Port Elizabeth is a multi-cargo port operational 363 days a year. Known for its ability to handle bulk, container, and liquid cargo operations, the port has become increasingly significant for maritime operators. Recent data underscores its growing prominence, with a notable rise in vessel traffic since late 2023 as ships increasingly route via the Cape of Good Hope.

Chevron’s expansion to this critical hub reflects its commitment to supporting maritime customers globally. The company will offer its range of marine engine lubricants, including the widely used Taro Ultra series, to vessels calling at Port Elizabeth.

Ayten Yavuz, Global Marine Lubricants General Manager at Chevron, emphasized the importance of this development “This marks a significant milestone in the development of our distribution network in southern waters. Port Elizabeth is a major port of call, and having Chevron lubricants available will certainly increase the service reliability for visiting vessels. We have worked closely with our local partners to make this strategic expansion possible, and I wish to thank them for their excellent cooperation.”

Collaboration driving reliability

This expansion was made possible through Chevron’s partnerships with local stakeholders, demonstrating the importance of collaboration in ensuring supply chain reliability. By increasing the availability of Chevron’s marine lubricants in this region, the company enhances its ability to meet the evolving needs of the global shipping industry.

A legacy of innovation in marine lubricants

Chevron Marine Lubricants has a storied history spanning over a century. Since its inception in 1879 as Pacific Coast Oil Co., the company has been a pioneer in marine lubrication. Milestones in its journey include the launch of marine engine oils in 1914, contributions to the first nuclear-powered passenger ship N.S. Savannah in 1962, and the formation of Chevron Marine Lubricants in 2008.

Today, Chevron Marine Lubricants operates in 700 ports worldwide, leveraging its renowned brands—Chevron, Texaco, and Caltex—to serve international marine customers. The company remains committed to innovation, evolving with industry regulations and customer needs to develop new technologies that lower carbon intensity and support a more sustainable maritime future.
