Biofuel Leadership: Glander and CEPSA Propel Cruises Toward Net-Zero

Glander CEPSA Biofuel Supply to Cruises

Leading bunker trading company, Glander International Bunkering, has made significant strides towards decarbonizing the maritime sector by successfully delivering second-generation Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) biofuel to cruise ships operating in the Mediterranean Sea. In collaboration with Spanish energy giant CEPSA, the companies are actively working to reduce the carbon footprint of the cruise industry, which is increasingly focused on achieving its decarbonization targets.

Since late June, Glander International Bunkering and CEPSA have successfully completed four HVO biofuel deliveries to a cruise vessel at the Port of Barcelona. This biofuel, derived from ISCC EU-certified raw materials, plays a critical role in creating a sustainable supply chain. The second-generation HVO biofuel can potentially reduce CO2 emissions by up to 90% compared to conventional marine fuels throughout its entire lifecycle, making it a crucial alternative fuel option for the shipping industry.

With demand for lower-carbon fuels rapidly growing across maritime sectors, shipping companies are turning to alternative solutions to meet stricter environmental regulations and goals. The International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) requirements, the inclusion of shipping in the European Union’s Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), and the upcoming FuelEU Maritime legislation set to come into force in 2025 are some of the regulatory pressures driving the need for sustainable fuel alternatives.

The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) is also working towards ensuring that the cruise industry has sufficient access to low-carbon fuels in order to achieve its goal of net-zero carbon cruising by 2050.

Larry Messina, Managing Director at Glander International Bunkering, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, “Partnering with CEPSA to deliver biofuel in one of the world’s most popular cruising regions reflects our commitment to decarbonizing the maritime sector. We are dedicated to ensuring our cruise clients not only meet evolving regulatory requirements but also make meaningful progress toward their long-term sustainability goals.”

Glander International Bunkering is well-positioned to serve the broader shipping industry, offering second-generation biofuel solutions in over 100 ports worldwide. As the industry faces mounting pressure to reduce emissions, biofuels like HVO are becoming increasingly critical in shaping the future of sustainable maritime transport.

Biofuels: A Key Component in Sustainable Marine Fuel Transition

Biofuels are increasingly recognized as a critical element in the transition toward sustainable marine fuels. Their key advantage lies in their status as a drop-in fuel, which means they can be utilized directly in existing ship engines with minimal modifications or onboard investments. This capability positions biofuels as a viable solution for shipping companies aiming to comply with the forthcoming Fuel EU Maritime regulations, set to take effect on January 1, 2025.

Global Supply of 2nd Generation Biofuels

Glander International Bunkering is strategically positioned to support the maritime industry’s adherence to these new regulations. The company is equipped to supply 2nd generation biofuels across more than 100 ports worldwide. This extensive network is particularly advantageous given the recent surge in biofuel demand. Notably, Glander International Bunkering has delivered B100 HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) to a seismic survey vessel and facilitated first-time biofuel supplies for various clients.
