VPS, a global leader in maritime decarbonisation advisory and marine fuel testing services and NorthStandard, a leading provider of global marine insurance, have announced the launch of the NorthStandard Fuel Insights platform, marking a significant advancement in fuel quality analytics. This new digital tool, integrated into NorthStandard’s Get SET! digital portfolio, is powered by VPS’s PortStats technology.
The NorthStandard Fuel Insights app offers exclusive, customized views of fuel quality trends derived from VPS’s comprehensive data sources. This data, generated by VPS’s laboratories in key bunkering hubs worldwide, provides NorthStandard account holders with crucial insights into fuel quality. The platform enables bunker procurement professionals to make more informed decisions by incorporating off-specs and calorific value into their analyses. Additionally, technical managers can use these insights to anticipate potential fuel quality risks and avoid poor-quality bunkers.
Beyond identifying off-specs, the platform also highlights cases that might require additional treatment or operational advice. As the marine industry continues to integrate various types and blends of biofuels, VPS is committed to continually enhancing the platform with actionable insights to address these developments.
Colin Gillespie, Global Head of Loss Prevention at NorthStandard, described the collaboration as a unique advancement in marine insurance. “This initiative provides NorthStandard members with seamless access to global fuel statistics, empowering them to trade confidently by managing risks and minimizing claims in one of the most challenging aspects of ship management.”
John Oosthoek, VP Operations Digital & Decarbonisation at VPS, emphasized the partnership’s significance. “The Fuel Insights platform represents the culmination of a growing partnership between NorthStandard and VPS. By leveraging reliable fuel quality data, ship owners and operators can better anticipate and mitigate risks related to fuel quality, such as cat fines, cold-flow issues, and stability.”
Steve Bee, Group Commercial & New Business Development Director at VPS, added, “While testing is crucial for verifying quality, accumulated data plays a vital role in informed fuel procurement decisions. VPS services help ensure that engines and fuel delivery systems are not damaged, crews remain safe, and vessels meet environmental regulations. For NorthStandard, Fuel Insights will enhance members’ ability to plan preventive maintenance and provide valuable data for claims or contract disputes.”
Gillespie also noted that the platform’s data could be instrumental in addressing claims or disputes. “For example, if substandard fuel issues are repeatedly linked to a specific port or if fuel problems on board lead to cargo delays, the data provides full transparency on fuel availability and quality. This is especially crucial given the rise of alternative fuels.”
VPS controls the largest and most comprehensive marine fuel quality database in shipping, including extensive analysis of newer products like biofuels and methanol. Steve Bee highlighted the alignment between NorthStandard and VPS on digitalization, stating, “This partnership is a natural fit due to our shared forward-looking approach. Accurate monitoring and reporting will not only enhance vessel performance but also support reductions in emissions and carbon intensity.”
