VARD, a prominent ship design and engineering company, has announced a new project with Cochin Shipyard Limited in India for the construction of two advanced Service Operation Vessels (SOVs). These vessels, designed for North Star, will be built based on the VARD 4 07 and VARD 4 19 designs.

Cochin Shipyard Limited is a key player in the Indian shipbuilding industry and has a rich history of successful projects. This latest contract continues their long-standing collaboration with VARD, following the delivery of 12 VARD-designed vessels.

VARD 4 07 Design

The first vessel, designed as per the VARD 4 07 specifications, will be a pioneering hybrid electric SOV. It is customized to meet North Star’s operational needs, emphasizing fuel efficiency and compact design. Key features include:

  • Accommodation: Facilities for 55 persons.
  • Crane: A 3D motion compensated crane for precise handling.
  • Warehouse: Side-loading capabilities and a step-less access 3D motion compensated gangway for smooth goods and personnel flow.

Set for delivery by the end of next year, this vessel will be chartered by EnBW, a leading German energy company, to support the He Dreiht wind farm. It will play a vital role in maintaining 64 wind turbines and will also function as a logistics hub.

VARD 4 19 Design

The second vessel will follow the VARD 4 19 design, similar to other North Star vessels previously delivered by VARD. This hybrid electric SOV will feature:

  • Accommodation: Capacity for up to 80 individuals, including 60 wind technicians.
  • Operational Support: Designed for maintenance operations across 95 wind turbines at the East Anglia Hub.

Scheduled for delivery to Siemens Gamesa in late 2026, this vessel will enhance operational efficiency at the wind farm.

Advanced SeaQ System Package

Both vessels will be equipped with VARD’s comprehensive SeaQ system package, which includes:

  • Hybrid Propulsion: Diesel-battery-electric system for improved energy efficiency.
  • Power Management: Integration of DC Switchboard with the SeaQ Energy Storage System for optimized energy use.

Vard Electro will provide a complete digital scope, including the SeaQ Integrated Automation System, SeaQ Power Management System, SeaQ Energy Management System, and SeaQ Green Pilot.

This project highlights VARD’s ability to extend its market reach through strategic partnerships. Ove Dimmen, Senior Vice President Sales & Marketing at VARD, said “This contract not only reinforces our long-term relationship with Cochin Shipyard Ltd. and North Star but also allows us to engage in markets beyond our own production capabilities.”

Technical Specifications

VARD 4 07 Design:

  • Length: 71 meters
  • Beam: 18 meters
  • Accommodation: 55 persons

VARD 4 19 Design:

  • Length: 90.5 meters
  • Beam: 19.5 meters
  • Accommodation: 80 persons

This announcement underscores VARD’s continued leadership in maritime design and engineering, contributing to advancements in offshore energy operations.
