Uniper, a leading global energy company, has officially selected Liquid Wind to develop its groundbreaking NorthStarH2 project in Östersund, Sweden. This landmark initiative aims to produce over 100,000 tons of e-Methanol annually, targeting the shipping and chemical industries to replace traditional fossil fuels and feedstock with sustainable alternatives.
The NorthStarH2 project represents a significant leap forward in the quest for green energy. The facility will convert biogenic carbon dioxide and renewable electricity into e-Methanol, a cutting-edge, fossil-free e-Fuel. This innovative approach aligns with Uniper’s commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions and showcases Sweden’s role as a frontrunner in the global green transition.
Liquid Wind has been chosen for this pivotal role due to its innovative project methodology. The company employs a standardized design and a sophisticated digital platform, enabling efficient replication and scaling of the technology. This streamlined approach is set to enhance the development process, facilitating the broader adoption of sustainable energy solutions.
Claes Fredriksson, CEO and Founder of Liquid Wind expressed enthusiasm about the partnership: “We are thrilled to partner with Uniper on the NorthStarH2 project. This initiative highlights Sweden’s ongoing leadership in the green transition and underscores the vital role of eFuel in decarbonizing various sectors, including shipping, aviation, and chemicals. Our collaboration with Uniper represents a significant advancement for Liquid Wind and exemplifies the impact of combining cutting-edge technology with strategic partnerships in the fight against global warming.”
Jan Taschenberger, COO of New Green Power and Gas at Uniper emphasized the project’s importance: “NorthStarH2 is a cornerstone of Uniper’s strategy to drive the energy transition. Through this innovative project, we are not only advancing green methanol production but also redefining how we collaborate on transformative energy solutions. We believe that successful, visionary projects like this one are achieved through dynamic partnerships. Together with Liquid Wind, we are shaping the future of sustainable energy.”
Strategic Partnership
Earlier this summer, Uniper and Liquid Wind formalized their collaboration through a strategic partnership agreement. This agreement is designed to accelerate the development of eFuel plants, with a particular focus on producing fossil-free eMethanol. The partnership reflects their shared vision of a sustainable future and reinforces their commitment to advancing green technologies.
