Shanghai Port Hits 50 Million TEUs

Shanghai Port has achieved a groundbreaking milestone, handling over 50 million TEUs in annual container throughput for the first time in history. This record, celebrated on December 22, 2024, at the Yangshan Phase IV Automated Terminal, cements Shanghai’s status as the world’s largest container port and a critical hub for global shipping.

Global Leadership in Container Shipping

Surpassing 50 million TEUs underscores Shanghai Port’s dominance in the maritime industry, maintaining its top position for the 15th consecutive year. With nearly 350 international shipping services linking more than 700 ports across 200+ countries, the port’s connectivity has led global rankings for 13 years.

Key drivers of this achievement include a 20% year-on-year growth in international transshipment volume, with annual transshipment exceeding 7 million TEUs. Strategic initiatives like enhanced customs support, innovative business models, and partnerships with 22 Yangtze River ports have bolstered this growth.

Focus on Clean Energy Bunkering

As part of its commitment to sustainability, Shanghai Port has significantly expanded its clean energy bunkering services:

  • LNG Bunkering Milestones:
In 2024, Shanghai Port completed 125 bonded LNG bunkering operations, totaling 730,000 cubic meters, and established LNG as a regular service. Annual LNG bunkering volume reached 450,000 cubic meters, a 70% increase from the previous year.
  • Green Methanol Advancements:
In April, the port achieved a global first by performing a green methanol ship-to-ship bunkering operation for a large container vessel. Regular green methanol bunkering services are planned by 2025, with an ambitious goal of reaching 1 million tons annually by 2030.
  • Infrastructure Growth:
Currently, Shanghai Port operates two LNG bunkering vessels and one methanol bunkering vessel, with plans to expand the fleet. By 2030, the port aims to achieve a “double-million” target of 1 million cubic meters of LNG and 1 million tons of green methanol bunkering capacity.
Digital and Green Innovations

Shanghai Port is leading in digitalization and environmental sustainability:

  • Automated terminals like Yangshan Phase IV and Luojing leverage advanced IT systems for 24/7 operations.
  • Platforms such as the International Container Transport Service Platform enhance intermodal logistics efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Shore power facilities across all terminals have increased energy savings, with ship calls using shore power rising 250% in 2024.
Vision for the Future

Shanghai Port’s strategy focuses on becoming a clean energy hub, integrating green bunkering into its services, and fostering global shipping resource allocation. With ongoing enhancements in technology, logistics, and sustainability, the port aims to solidify its position as a global leader in maritime innovation and clean energy solutions.
