Seaspan Energy, a frontrunner in LNG bunkering in North America, has successfully completed Canada’s first ship-to-ship (STS) LNG bunkering operation for a containership in the Port of Vancouver. The milestone event took place in English Bay on March 9, 2025, marking a significant step in the expansion of LNG as a viable alternative fuel in North America’s maritime sector.

LNG Bunkering Operation Details

The operation was carried out by the Seaspan Garibaldi, one of Seaspan Energy’s three LNG bunkering vessels. The recipient vessel was the CMA CGM Pointe Du Piton, a 7,900 TEU containership with a deadweight tonnage of 75,000, which was built in 2024 by HD Hyundai Samho. This successful STS LNG transfer underscores Seaspan Energy’s capability to provide safe and efficient LNG bunkering services in the Pacific Northwest and beyond.

Seaspan Energy President Harly Penner highlighted the company’s commitment to reducing emissions in the maritime sector. “Seaspan is proud to be at the forefront of helping to reduce vessel emissions here in North America as LNG becomes an increasingly important transitional fuel for the marine industry,” Penner stated. “As more shipowners seek to use LNG to power their tankers, containerships, car carriers, and cruise ships, we are excited to offer our LNG bunkering services for those seeking ship-to-ship refueling in the Pacific Northwest and beyond.”

Port of Vancouver’s LNG Readiness

The Port of Vancouver has taken a proactive role in enabling LNG as an alternative marine fuel. Captain Shri Madiwal, Vice President of Operations and Supply Chain at the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, emphasized the importance of ensuring safe and efficient fuel options within the port. “Seaspan Energy’s role in providing safe, in-port LNG bunkering services aligns with our broader goal of reducing vessel emissions and enabling Canada’s trade in a more sustainable manner.”

Seaspan Energy’s latest ship-to-ship LNG bunkering operation builds on its previous success at the Port of Vancouver in January 2025 and its first-ever ship-to-ship LNG bunkering operation in North America, which took place in December 2024 at the Port of Vancouver. These efforts reinforce the port’s position as a leader in LNG adoption among Canadian ports and as a key player in the global energy transition.

Seaspan Energy’s Growing LNG Bunkering Capabilities

Seaspan Energy has positioned itself at the forefront of LNG bunkering in North America with a growing fleet of specialized LNG bunkering vessels. The company’s three LNG bunkering ships—Seaspan Garibaldi, Seaspan Lions, and Seaspan Baker—each measuring 112 meters in length, are designed to support the shipping industry’s shift towards cleaner fuel alternatives. The company’s commitment to sustainability and emissions reduction aligns with global efforts to decarbonize shipping and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority has recognized Seaspan Energy’s leadership in LNG bunkering and has accredited the company as an official provider of LNG refueling services.

Captain Shri Madiwal, Vice President of Operations and Supply Chain at the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, stated, “Ensuring there are safe marine refueling services available for ships calling the Port of Vancouver is critical to our purpose of enabling Canada’s trade.”

Canada’s Commitment to LNG and the Global Energy Transition

Canada is increasingly positioning itself as a key player in the global LNG supply chain. The country’s commitment to LNG aligns with broader climate goals while enhancing energy security and international trade partnerships.

Jonathan Wilkinson, Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, emphasized the significance of this transition, stating, “In an increasingly volatile world, Canada is rising to meet the challenges of the moment by strengthening its resiliency and economic position and diversifying our trading partners. This is particularly the case in the field of marine transportation.”

Seaspan Energy has emerged as a leader in LNG bunkering solutions in North America, supporting the maritime industry’s transition towards cleaner fuels. The company, a part of Seaspan Marine, is a key player in the Pacific Northwest marine economy and has been instrumental in the growth of LNG as a cleaner alternative fuel for the shipping industry.

Expanding LNG Bunkering on the West Coast

With its latest milestone in Vancouver, Seaspan Energy continues to expand its LNG infrastructure and services along the West Coast. The company’s three-ship fleet is designed to serve the increasing number of LNG-powered vessels operating in North America. As the global LNG fuel market grows, Seaspan Energy’s investments in LNG infrastructure place Canada among the key players in the transition to cleaner marine fuels.

Seaspan’s progress reflects broader industry trends, with ports and shipping companies increasingly adopting LNG as a pathway toward reduced emissions. The Port of Vancouver, in particular, has been at the forefront of Canada’s LNG adoption, further strengthening the country’s commitment to sustainable shipping practices.
