Sallaum Lines, a global leader in RoRo cargo shipping, has partnered with Wärtsilä to retrofit advanced energy-efficient solutions for three of its Pure Car/Truck Carrier (PCTC) vessels—Silver Queen, Silver Moon, and Silver Sky. The upgrades, part of the company’s broader decarbonisation programme, will include Wärtsilä’s EnergoFlow solution and Fixed Pitch Propellers (FPP). The contract was secured by Wärtsilä in Q4 2024.
Decarbonisation Through Innovation
The shipping industry is under increasing pressure to meet the IMO’s 2050 net-zero targets, requiring operators to adopt technologies that reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Sallaum Lines’ decision to implement Wärtsilä’s marine solutions reflects its commitment to sustainability and operational efficiency. These vessels, with a capacity of 4,900 cars each, have been in operation for 15 years and are set to benefit from the tailored Wärtsilä Decarbonisation Programme.
The EnergoFlow pre-swirl stator enhances the inflow of water to the propeller, optimizing efficiency under various operating conditions. Paired with Wärtsilä’s FPPs, designed for peak performance with minimal noise and vibration, these solutions are expected to significantly cut fuel consumption, reduce CO2 emissions, and lower operational costs.
A Collaborative Effort
Puneet Arora, Head of Technical at Sallaum Lines, emphasized the importance of the collaboration “Wärtsilä’s Decarbonisation Programme has greatly helped us as we strive to minimise the environmental impact of our operations. By adding the Wärtsilä innovations to these three vessels, we are taking an important step forward towards meeting our sustainability goals.”
Rajan Khanna, Wärtsilä Marine’s Head of Sales for the Middle East, praised Sallaum Lines’ proactive approach “With increasing pressure within the industry to decarbonise, we applaud Sallaum Lines for taking action to proactively implement solutions which will help them to maximise operational efficiency and minimise environmental impact of their vessels.”
Commitment to Sustainability
This partnership highlights Sallaum Lines’ dedication to achieving zero emissions by 2050, aligning with its mission to lead the shipping sector toward a sustainable future. The adoption of Wärtsilä’s solutions is a vital milestone in this journey.
