SABIC Launches Low Carbon Methanol

SABIC, a global leader in the chemical industry, has announced the launch of its new certified low carbon fuels portfolio as part of its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. This initiative is designed to assist customers and the entire value chain in reaching their sustainability objectives, particularly when seeking products with a reduced carbon footprint.

The inaugural product in this innovative portfolio is methanol, sourced from SABIC’s Chemicals business. This low carbon methanol boasts a significantly lower carbon content compared to traditional offerings while maintaining the same high-quality specifications that SABIC is known for. The reduced carbon footprint is primarily attributed to the utilization of by-product CO2 captured from upstream processes through Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU). This method not only provides a valuable carbon source for methanol production but also decreases reliance on conventional feedstocks, resulting in substantial Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) savings.

SABIC’s certified low carbon methanol is produced at its joint ventures’ methanol production facilities. The applications for this product are diverse, including its use in maritime fuel.

In line with its commitment to sustainability, SABIC plans to roll out more certified low carbon products across its global asset base. “The petrochemical industry plays a pivotal role in shaping a resilient and sustainable future,” stated Olivier Thorel, Executive Vice President of Chemicals at SABIC. He emphasized that with rising demand for innovative materials and sustainable practices, the industry is at the forefront of transformative trends towards carbon neutrality and a circular carbon economy. SABIC is dedicated to exploring solutions with its value chain partners to achieve its carbon neutrality ambitions.

As a proactive industry player, SABIC has collaborated with independent third parties to develop the new International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) Carbon Footprint Certification (CFC) module. This module, designed for certifying the carbon footprints of various products and value chains, will facilitate the linking of sustainability certifications and mass balancing across complex value chains.

Dr. Fahad Al Sherehy, Vice President of Corporate Sustainability at SABIC, highlighted the company’s commitment to advancing technologies that support carbon footprint reduction within its value chains. This includes initiatives focused on electrification, hydrogen combustion, renewable energy, and carbon capture, utilization, and storage. The project aims to convert captured CO2 into low carbon methanol and its derivatives, significantly reducing embedded carbon emissions throughout SABIC’s value chains and those of its customers.

SABIC continues to pursue efforts to meet its carbon neutrality goals by 2050, taking into consideration various regional and national commitments and initiatives. The introduction of this new low carbon product line further exemplifies SABIC’s collaborative approach with partners along the value chain to address and mitigate indirect Scope 3 emissions.
