Last month, Trasmapi, the leading ferry company on the Ibiza-Formentera route, partnered with Repsol, a leading energy company, has host Spain’s first-ever maritime trial of 100% renewable fuel at Marina Ibiza. This significant milestone marks Trasmapi as the first Spanish shipping company to test this renewable diesel, which is produced from organic waste.
In recent years, Trasmapi has been modernizing its fleet to meet the latest technological standards. By the end of 2024, the company will have completed the remotorization of its entire fleet operating on the Ibiza and Formentera routes. This initiative, in collaboration with Repsol, represents a crucial step towards integrating renewable fuels in the maritime sector, aiming to reduce net emissions in transportation.
The renewable fuels used are derived from organic waste materials, such as used cooking oil and agro-industrial by-products, providing a second life to these materials. This solution is both cost-effective and efficient for decarbonizing all transport sectors, including maritime.
Rafael Cardona, Manager of Trasmapi, commented on the occasion, “This year marks Trasmapi’s 50th anniversary. Over the past years, we have worked towards technological improvements, making this initiative with Repsol crucial as we move towards a future focused on sustainability and environmental commitment.”
The renewable fuels being tested are equivalent in quality and engine performance to their conventional counterparts. The key difference is that they are produced sustainably, replacing traditional mineral-based raw materials with sustainable organic materials, such as used cooking oil and biomass.
For this trial, Repsol and Trasmapi utilized the fast-ferry Illetas Jet, a high-speed vessel operating the Ibiza-Formentera route. Designed in collaboration with the Galician shipyard Rodman Polyships and launched in 2017, the Illetas Jet, along with its sister ships Migjorn Jet and Espalmador Jet, represents Trasmapi’s fleet modernization.
Miguel Sierra, Manager of Marina and Fishing at Repsol, stated, “This partnership with Trasmapi highlights our commitment to the maritime sector and Repsol’s investment in renewable fuels in Spain. These fuels expand the range of sustainable technologies available for mobility and assist our clients in selecting the best options for their needs. Repsol is prepared to supply the maritime sector with the renewable diesel needed to achieve its decarbonization goals.”
