Bangkok, Thailand | October 19, 2025 – Regional Container Lines (RCL) achieved a significant sustainability milestone with the first-ever sailing of one of its vessels using biofuel. The move highlights RCL’s commitment to alternative fuel solutions and reducing its carbon footprint.
RCL’s vessel M.V. Piya Bhum, a 1,707 TEU container ship, departed from Laem Chabang port en route to Ho Chi Minh City, operating on B24-VLSFO (Bio Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil). The vessel is serving RCL’s RSK2 South China-Sihanoukville route, which connects ports across China, Hong Kong, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines.
B24 Biofuel: A Cleaner, Efficient Solution
The B24 biofuel blend combines conventional very low sulphur fuel oil with bio-components derived from renewable sources. This hybrid fuel is designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 15% to 19.2%, helping shipping companies lower their carbon footprint without sacrificing vessel efficiency. For RCL, adopting B24 is part of a broader commitment to sustainable operations, providing a practical pathway toward cleaner maritime shipping.
“This milestone is a clear demonstration of RCL’s ongoing investment in cleaner and more efficient shipping solutions, by adopting biofuels, we are actively reducing the environmental impact of our fleet while continuing to deliver reliable, high-quality service across Asia.” shared RCL.
