Port of Malaga First bio-LNG Bunkering Axpo MSC

Málaga, Spain | 01 October 2025 – The Port of Málaga has marked a major milestone in the maritime energy transition by hosting its first-ever bio-liquefied natural gas (bio-LNG) bunkering operation, which took place on 24 September 2025. The historic fueling was executed via ship-to-ship (STS) transfer from the LNG bunker vessel Avenir Aspiration to the container ship MSC Gabon, positioning Málaga as a growing strategic hub in the Mediterranean for alternative marine fuel supply.

The operation was conducted by Axpo, a leading European energy company authorized to provide LNG bunkering services at the Port of Málaga. A total of 3,000 cubic meters of bio-LNG was successfully transferred—marking the first time renewable LNG has been supplied at the port and further cementing Axpo’s reputation as a frontrunner in sustainable marine fuel solutions.

Axpo previously made history in Málaga by completing the port’s first-ever STS LNG bunkering operation. With this latest milestone, it becomes the first supplier to deliver bio-LNG in the port—a renewable fuel produced from organic waste and biomass, offering a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional marine fuels and even fossil-based LNG.

Strategic Role in the Mediterranean’s Green Shipping Corridor

This operation represents a key advancement in the Port of Málaga’s commitment to decarbonizing maritime transport. By enabling access to cleaner fuel alternatives, the port is actively supporting the IMO’s decarbonization goals and aligning with the EU FuelEU Maritime regulations taking effect in 2025.

Located at the crossroads of East–West and North–South trade routes, the Port of Málaga is rapidly emerging as a strategic alternative bunkering hub in the Western Mediterranean. This successful bio-LNG delivery opens the door for future operations involving other low- and zero-carbon fuels, including e-methanol, bio-methanol, ammonia, and green hydrogen.

Operational Excellence & Environmental Impact

The bunkering operation was planned and executed under strict safety and environmental protocols. The Avenir Aspiration, a modern LNG bunkering vessel, moored alongside the MSC Gabon to perform the STS transfer, coordinated with port authorities, terminal operators, ship agents, and the fuel supplier to ensure safe and efficient delivery.

The use of bio-LNG in this operation is expected to lead to a notable reduction in CO₂-equivalent emissions, contributing to global efforts to combat climate change and green the international supply chain.

MSC’s Commitment to Sustainable Shipping

As the world’s largest container shipping company, MSC continues to demonstrate strong leadership in the maritime energy transition. The company is committed to reducing the environmental impact of global shipping and has taken significant steps toward decarbonizing its operations.

From investing in low- and zero-carbon fuels like bio-LNG and methanol, to commissioning next-generation energy-efficient vessels, MSC is aligning its fleet strategy with IMO and EU climate goals. The company also promotes innovation in fuel flexibility, digital optimization, and port collaborations, reinforcing its commitment to building a cleaner, more resilient global supply chain.

This bio-LNG bunkering at the Port of Málaga serves as a clear example of MSC’s real-world decarbonization efforts.

Port of Málaga’s Vision for a Greener Future

This landmark event underscores the Port of Málaga’s long-term strategy to become a green port and a regional leader in sustainable maritime logistics. The port authority continues to invest in the infrastructure, partnerships, and services needed to support next-generation fuels and promote sustainable maritime transport.

In a statement, the Málaga Port Authority shared “This successful bio-LNG bunkering operation demonstrates Málaga’s proactive role in the global energy transition. We are committed to supporting shipping lines and energy providers in reducing emissions and embracing cleaner fuels. This is just the beginning of a new chapter in sustainable bunkering at our port.”
