Petrobras has taken a major step forward in renewable energy with the first sale of its Diesel R, a diesel fuel containing renewable content, to Vale. This partnership is a milestone in sustainable fuel adoption for Brazil’s maritime, logistics, and mining industries. Signed on October 18 in Rio de Janeiro by Petrobras President Magda Chambriard and Vale President Gustavo Pimenta, the agreement includes supplying Vale’s off-road and rail vehicles with Diesel R, a fuel that combines petroleum derivatives with vegetable-based inputs, offering a total renewable content of 18.3%.
Diesel R is currently being used by Vale in a high-capacity, off-road truck (214 tons) operating at the Fábrica Nova mine in Minas Gerais, as well as in a locomotive along the Espírito Santo-Minas Gerais rail line. This unique fuel solution is part of Petrobras’ broader low-carbon product offerings, aimed at supporting Brazil’s energy transition. Notably, Diesel R does not require modifications to engines or storage infrastructure, providing a seamless switch for companies seeking cleaner operations.
The Petrobras and Vale partnership goes beyond immediate fuel supply. As part of the agreement, both companies will explore new business opportunities centered on sustainable energy, including developing and marketing low-carbon fuels and a renewable bunker fuel with 24% bio-content. This renewable bunker fuel could provide the maritime industry with an alternative that aligns with stringent emission regulations while fostering regional competitiveness in renewable energy production.
Petrobras’ Diesel R is a result of innovative co-processing technology, where conventional diesel is blended with hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO). This process makes it chemically identical to mineral diesel, ensuring compatibility with all diesel engines and storage systems. Diesel R is part of Petrobras’ patented line of renewable diesel products, delivering on the company’s commitment to developing eco-friendly energy solutions.
According to Petrobras President Magda Chambriard, “Diesel R represents a critical advancement in green fuel technology, reinforcing Petrobras’ commitment to lowering carbon emissions and providing practical, sustainable solutions to our customers. This partnership with Vale is not only beneficial to both companies but supports Petrobras’ decarbonization goals by creating and distributing greener fuel alternatives.”
Vale’s President Gustavo Pimenta added, “We are excited to partner with Petrobras on this sustainable initiative, which aligns with our commitment to reducing emissions in our operations. Together, we aim to create value for Brazil through renewable energy solutions that benefit our industry and environment.”
This alliance with Vale showcases Petrobras’ dedication to pushing boundaries in renewable energy, positioning Brazil as a leader in sustainable fuel technology within the bunkering, mining, and transportation industries. This partnership contributes to Petrobras’ strategy of expanding its logistical and production capabilities for low-emission fuels, including diesel, natural gas, and bunker alternatives designed for greener maritime operations.
