Petrobras starts selling Marine Gasoil (MGO) with lower sulfur content in Santos, Ultra Low Sulfur Marine Gas Oil (ULSMGO) contains a maximum sulfur content of 0.1%

Petrobras, since March 1st, started offering a product with a very low sulfur content at the Port of Santos. The Ultra Low Sulfur Marine Gas Oil (ULSMGO) contains a maximum sulfur content of 0.1% and is required in Sulfur Emission Control Areas (ECAs), where there are more restrictive limits for the emission of sulfur oxides, resulting from the burning of fuel in vessels. Ships on long haul voyages to ports in these areas must use ULSMGO in their main engine. The new product is produced at the Presidente Bernardes refinery (RPBC), in Cubatão, São Paulo.

According to the Executive Manager for Commercialization in the Domestic Market at Petrobras, Sandro Paes Barreto, “delivering this product with a lower sulfur content at the Port of Santos is an addition to our initiatives to offer society products with a guarantee of lower emissions.”

Until then, Petrobras traded in the Port of Santos the conventional Petrobras Marine Gas oil (MGO), for long-haul and cabotage shipowners. It is used in auxiliary power generation or emergency systems on large ships and in main engines on medium and small ships, containing a maximum sulfur content of 0.5%. Both products are obtained from the lighter fractions of the refining process (mainly atmospheric gasoils).

By introducing the ULSMGO in the port of Santos, Petrobras helps shipowners to reduce emissions of the sulfur oxide pollutant, in addition to avoiding stops for refueling on the way for vessels passing through the Sulfur Emission Control Areas, reducing travel times and cost.
