Pertamina on efforts to achieve net zero emission

At Nikkei Forum “Future of Asia” event in Tokyo, Pertamina Expresses Commitment and Efforts to Achieve Net Zero Emission

Pertamina is committed to supporting the Indonesian government in achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2060 or earlier through a decarbonization roadmap for assets and green business building development.

Pertamina’s commitment was conveyed by Salyadi D. Saputra, Director of Strategy, Portfolio, and Business Development of Pertamina, while present as one of the speakers at the 28th Nikkei Forum “Future of Asia” event in Tokyo on May 26, 2023.

During the panel discussion session titled “Asia’s GX (green transformation) changes the world,” Salyadi conveyed Pertamina’s efforts towards decarbonization. It follows the Indonesian government’s commitment to achieve Net Zero Emissions by 2060.

“Indonesia is currently giving more attention to climate change, including Pertamina. We are making decarbonization efforts, which are mapped out in a decarbonization roadmap consisting of two pillars: decarbonization and new business building for renewable energy,” he said.

Currently, Pertamina’s revenue contribution from fossil fuels is still around 82%. Pertamina could reduce this contribution to 60% by 2030 and 30-35% by 2060 with the new businesses in the renewable energy sector.

As for the new business building aspect, through its sub-holding, Pertamina is striving to explore new energy resources that are expected to contribute more to revenue.

“Pertamina is obligated to ensure energy is available, affordable, and reliable for the community. It is what we need, to balance—how we can create energy security while also converting to green energy sources. This is a challenge for us, but we have identified what we can do,” explained Salyadi.

Pertamina’s decarbonization and energy efficiency efforts include environmentally friendly power plants, losses reduction, fleet electrification, static equipment electrification, Carbon Capture Storage (CCS), and low-carbon fuel for fleets.

Furthermore, Pertamina’s new businesses include Renewable Energy, EV charging and swapping, Blue/Green Hydrogen, Nature-Based Solutions, Batteries and EVs, Biofuel, integrated CCS/CCUS, and Carbon Market Business.
