OSM Thome and Pherousa Green Shipping Collaborate on Major Ultramax Project

Norwegian companies OSM Thome and Pherousa Green Shipping AS, referred to as “PGS,” have formalized their collaboration through a Letter of Intent for a series of 63,000 dead weight (dwt) Ultramax vessels, set to be ordered by PGS.

This collaborative endeavor spans Phases I, II, and III, encompassing Drawing Approval, Project Development, and Site Supervision for six 63,000 dwt Ultramax Bulk Carriers. In addition, OSM Thome will be entrusted with the crew and technical management of these newly constructed vessels.

Headquartered in Oslo and established in 2023, Pherousa Green Shipping AS is initiating an order for up to six state-of-the-art, zero-emission Ultramax dry bulk carriers. Designed by Deltamarin in Finland, these vessels draw inspiration from an existing Deltamarin Ultramax model, ingeniously modified to incorporate the ammonia cracking technology developed by Pherousa Green Technologies AS (PGT). This innovation utilizes ammonia as a hydrogen carrier, facilitating genuinely emission-free propulsion.

OSM Thome brings extensive proficiency in overseeing the design and construction of diverse vessel types, including Anchor Handling Tug and Supply (AHTS) vessels, Shuttle Tankers, Dry Bulk vessels, MR Tankers, PSVs, Jack Up Rigs, Storage Platforms, Car Carriers, RORO and RO-Pax Carriers, Accommodation Barges and Vessels, Offshore decommissioning projects, Battery Operated Vessels (BOBs) and Battery-Operated Ferries (Norwegian Sector), Fully Autonomous Vessels (Ammonia Propulsion), Expedition Vessels, and Cruise Liners.

“We are pleased to join forces with the esteemed Shipmanagement group, OSM Thome, to expedite the realization of our upcoming fleet of authentic zero-emission Ultramax bulk carriers. Our early collaboration with OSM Thome ensures the comprehensive preparation and training of crew members well ahead of vessel delivery. This proactive approach guarantees the establishment of safety protocols aligned with sea-handling guidelines,” remarked Hans Bredrup, Chairman of the Pherousa Group.

The inaugural fleet of six Ultramax dry bulk carriers possesses a distinct focus on catering to the global copper industry. Given copper’s integral role in worldwide decarbonization endeavors, the copper sector has outlined ambitious emission reduction objectives, encompassing Scope 3 emissions encompassing transportation to end users. Mr. Bredrup further stated, “The concept has garnered significant support, and we are actively engaging with key stakeholders in both ammonia supply and vessel end-users. This momentum is propelling us towards realizing zero-emission copper transportation, fostering a fully zero-carbon supply chain from mines to destinations.”

“We deeply value PGS’s confidence in our capabilities, demonstrated through this agreement. Since the merger of OSM Maritime Group and Thome Group, culminating in the formation of OSM Thome earlier this year, we have diligently harnessed the collective strengths and competencies of our employees to deliver tangible benefits to our clients. We eagerly anticipate collaborating closely with PGS’s team to ensure the successful oversight and management of this project, thereby creating sustainable transportation solutions,” affirmed Tommy Olofsen, OSM Thome’s Chief Commercial Officer.
