Molgas Energy Group has secured a 10-year operating license through its Molgas Marine unit to supply LNG via truck-to-ship operations at the Port of Bilbao. The milestone reinforces the company’s expanding Spanish network and active role in shaping national maritime decarbonization policies.
Madrid, Spain | July 3, 2026 – Expanding its footprint in clean marine infrastructure, Molgas Energy Group has been awarded a landmark 10-year operating license to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) to vessels at the Port of Bilbao.
Granted through its specialized Molgas Marine business unit, the authorization authorizes the company to conduct physical Truck-to-Ship (TTS) LNG bunkering operations, marking a critical step forward in scaling alternative marine fuel availability across strategic Spanish ports.
Strengthening the Spanish Alternative Fuel Network
The decade-long license significantly reinforces Molgas’s operational capacity within the Iberian Peninsula, allowing the company to deliver flexible, lower-emission marine energy solutions directly to commercial vessels calling at Bilbao. Truck-to-ship LNG bunkering serves as a vital bridge for maritime decarbonization, offering agile and efficient fueling capabilities without requiring extensive fixed marine terminal infrastructure.
In addition to securing the Bilbao operating rights, Molgas recently extended its industry influence to the regulatory and institutional level. Representatives from the company participated in the official presentation of the new LNG Supply Tender Model hosted by Spain’s Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility.
Contributing through the Gasnam association’s specialized TTS working group, Molgas lent its technical expertise to help shape the nation’s evolving regulatory framework and future supply models.
Driving the Maritime Energy Transition
Commenting on the dual milestones, leadership at Molgas emphasized the group’s hands-on approach to sustainable shipping:
“One thing that defines Molgas is that we do not watch the maritime energy transition from the sidelines. We actively contribute to it, working alongside key stakeholders to make a more efficient and future-ready supply model possible.”
With a robust downstream network spanning multiple European countries, Molgas continues to position itself as a frontrunner in small-scale LNG (SSLNG) and bio-LNG applications, supporting shipowners in meeting stringent global environmental targets.
Port of Bilbao: A Booming Atlantic Gateway for Energy and Trade
Located on the Bay of Biscay in northern Spain, the Port of Bilbao stands as the leading maritime hub on the Atlantic Arc and a crucial gateway connecting European and transoceanic trade markets. Operating as a versatile economic engine, the port demonstrates exceptional momentum, having handled over 17.3 million tonnes of cargo in the first half of the year alone, marking its strongest growth period in over two decades.
Driven heavily by liquid bulks, crude oil, and energy products like Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), which accounts for roughly 11% of its total throughput, Bilbao is increasingly positioning itself as a vital strategic bunker station and logistics center for alternative and sustainable marine fuels. Beyond traditional energy traffic, the port serves as a major manufacturing and export hub for renewable energy infrastructure, notably facilitating massive offshore wind components and green hydrogen initiatives.
