Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) shared exciting news about Japan’s first-ever hybrid passenger ship, called ‘HANARIA.’ This unique ship runs on two types of special fuels: hydrogen and biodiesel. A big ceremony was held to name and launch the ship.
MOL’s subsidiary company, MOTENA-Sea, Ltd., ordered the ship, and it’s being built at the Hongawara Shipyard Co., Ltd. They plan to finish building it in March 2024, and it will start taking passengers in Fukuoka Prefecture in April 2024.
What’s great about ‘HANARIA’ is that it helps the environment. It will make much less carbon dioxide (CO2) compared to regular ships that use fossil fuels. This ship has a special system that’s the first of its kind in Japan. It can use different types of power sources, like hydrogen fuel cells, lithium-ion batteries, and biodiesel fuel, to run. This makes it very eco-friendly.
