Meriaura, a prominent Finnish shipping company, has chosen Auramarine, a pioneering leader in fuel supply systems for the marine, power, and process industries, to deliver two shipsets of Diesel Fuel Oil (DFO) and Liquid Biofuel (LBO) supply systems. This collaboration will support Meriaura’s latest fleet of cargo vessels, reinforcing their operational reliability, performance, and sustainability efforts.
The Auramarine fuel supply systems will be installed on two new cargo ships, hull numbers BN832 and BN833, being constructed by the renowned Dutch shipyard Royal Bodewes. These vessels are part of Meriaura’s ongoing commitment to reducing environmental impact and enhancing operational efficiency. The delivery of the fuel supply systems will be coordinated through Auramarine’s Shanghai factory, with the expected delivery dates to the shipyard set for May 2025 and March 2026, respectively.
The fuel supply systems are designed to ensure optimal fuel management by maintaining the required temperature and viscosity of the fuel, ensuring it meets engine specifications and supporting the vessels’ overall performance. This precision is essential in maintaining fuel quality and operational integrity, preventing costly damage and reducing the risk of unplanned downtime.
The new ships, named the Ecotrader class, are notable for their environmental credentials. Measuring 105 meters in length and with a 6750 DWT capacity, these vessels are classified with an ice-class 1A rating, making them capable of navigating challenging northern waters, particularly the Baltic and North Seas. Designed to meet the lowest possible emission standards, the Ecotrader ships are approximately 30% larger than Meriaura’s earlier EcoCoaster vessels, such as the Eeva VG and Mirva VG. This size increase translates to improved economic efficiency and a reduced environmental footprint in terms of transport.
A key feature of these vessels is their ability to run on biofuels derived from recycled raw materials, produced by Meriaura’s subsidiary VG-Ecofuel. This flexibility offers ship operators greater control over fuel choices, aligning with Meriaura’s strategic vision of achieving carbon neutrality by the 2030s. In addition to biofuels, the fuel supply systems from Auramarine are designed to handle a range of biofuels, making them adaptable to the evolving fuel landscape of the shipping industry.
John Bergman, CEO of Auramarine, commented on the partnership, saying, “We’re proud of our long-standing partnership with industry leaders like Meriaura. Through close collaboration with shipowners and shipyards, we’re able to develop tailored and reliable solutions that ensure effective fuel management and ongoing safety. As shipping navigates a multifuel future, quality is key, and these fit-for-purpose systems will give shipowners the confidence to make long-term investments in their vessels’ operational integrity.”
Beppe Rosin, CEO of Meriaura, added, “Meriaura has set an ambitious goal to reach carbon neutrality within the 2030s. Rather than waiting for future fuel solutions, we’ve proactively developed our own biofuel and invested in technology that enables its use on our vessels. As a pioneer in large-scale biofuel utilization, we are thrilled to collaborate with a well-reputed and local technology provider like Auramarine.”
