Denmark | December 19, 2025 – As the global race to scale green fuels intensifies, two Danish industry leaders, Topsoe and Maersk Training, are collaborating to address a critical safety gap in the rapidly evolving Power-to-X sector.

A Fast-Moving Industry Without Unified Safety Standards

Power-to-X (PtX), the conversion of renewable electricity into e-fuels such as hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, or synthetic fuels, is increasingly regarded as a cornerstone of the energy transition. These fuels provide essential solutions for sectors that are difficult to electrify directly, including shipping, aviation, and heavy industry. By transforming surplus renewable energy into storable carriers, PtX not only helps integrate intermittent wind and solar power but also plays a pivotal role in reducing carbon emissions globally.

Despite the technological progress, the PtX industry faces a major challenge: safety standards have not kept pace with the rapid deployment of projects. Currently, there are no dedicated industry guidelines for PtX operations, leaving companies to develop bespoke training programs or adapt modules from other high-risk sectors. This patchwork approach often results in duplicated efforts, inefficient knowledge transfer, and elevated costs, while leaving workers exposed to unnecessary risks.

Recognizing this gap, Topsoe and Maersk Training have teamed up to design comprehensive, realistic, and competency-driven safety training programs tailored specifically for PtX.

Proactive Safety Leadership as a Priority

Sundus Cordelia Ramli, Chief Commercial Officer Power-to-X at Topsoe, emphasized the urgency of building a strong safety culture. “The Power-to-X industry is scaling faster than regulation can keep up, and that makes proactive safety leadership critical,” Ramli explained that the partnership is designed to ensure that the emerging sector develops on a foundation of competence, preparedness, and care.

By combining Topsoe’s technological expertise with Maersk Training’s experience in realistic, competency-based learning, we aim to equip the workforce with both the skills and mindset needed to operate safely in this nascent industry,” Ramli added.

Beyond Compliance: Real-World Readiness

For Maersk Training, the collaboration goes far beyond regulatory compliance. Per Larsen, Head of Learning and Product Development at Maersk Training, highlighted the organisation’s focus on real-world preparedness.

We bring close to 50 years of experience in training personnel across high-risk industries. But we also recognise that collaboration strengthens our programs, allowing us to integrate cutting-edge technical knowledge from partners like Topsoe,” Larsen said. “This is not about ticking boxes; it’s about making sure people on the front line are fully equipped to manage real operational challenges safely and efficiently.

Establishing a Benchmark for PtX Safety

The joint effort will focus on a risk- and role-specific training approach. By creating realistic simulations, competency-based learning modules, and a culture of proactive safety, Topsoe and Maersk Training aim to prevent the mistakes that often occur when new technology advances faster than safety frameworks and human skill development.

This approach also ensures efficiency in workforce development, reducing redundant training and helping companies accelerate PtX project deployment with confidence that personnel are prepared for complex operational scenarios.

What Is Power-to-X?

Power-to-X refers to the set of technologies that convert renewable electricity into other energy carriers or chemicals, such as hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, or synthetic fuels. These carriers are storable and transportable, allowing integration with sectors that are difficult to decarbonize. By leveraging excess renewable energy, PtX helps balance grid demand and supports a faster global transition to low-carbon energy systems.
