LR Approval for Behydro engine

LR awards Type Approval to BeHydro for its hydrogen dual-fuel engine, The Type Approval is the first ever for a hydrogen engine with dual-fuel capabilities.

Lloyd’s Register (LR) has granted Type Approval to ‘BeHydro,’ a joint venture between CMB.TECH and Anglo Belgian Corporation (ABC), for its groundbreaking hydrogen-powered dual-fuel engine. This marks a historic achievement as the first Type Approval for a dual-fuel hydrogen engine.

With a robust capacity of up to 2.7 megawatts (MW), the new engine presents shipowners with the potential to achieve an impressive 85% reduction in CO₂ emissions. The dual-fuel technology incorporated in the engine allows it to seamlessly switch to conventional fuels in situations where renewable energy or hydrogen is unavailable.

Unveiled at Europort 2023, the engine development targets both shoreside operations and maritime use, setting the stage for BeHydro to explore the creation of larger capacity hydrogen engines in the future.

LR initially granted Approval in Principle in September 2020 and has undertaken a rigorous Type Approval process, ensuring the utmost standards of safety and material suitability.

This collaboration with BeHydro builds upon our important work as part of the previous Approval in Principle for their dual-fuel hydrogen engine.

Claudene Sharp-Patel, Technical Director of Lloyd’s Register, said: “The Type Approval, a first-of-its-kind for hydrogen engines, demonstrates the potential of hydrogen as a fuel for shipping and underlines LR’s commitment to accelerating the adoption of safe and reliable future fuel technologies.”

Roy Campe, CTO of CMB.TECH, said: “Achieving a type approval on a first of its kind is not an easy process. Therefore, we are pleased to see our own positive test results confirmed by this LR Type Approval. The robust and cost-effective BeHydro technology is now ready to accelerate the reduction of CO₂ emissions throughout the maritime industry.”

Tim Berckmoes, CEO of ABC Engines, said: “This LR Type Approval of confirms the reliability and the safety of the BeHydro/ABC engines. The dual-fuel hydrogen engines are ready for all marine applications worldwide.”

BeHydro is a Belgian joint venture between Anglo Belgian Corporation and CMB.TECH to develop and commercialize dual fuel and 100% hydrogen engines in a power range from 600 kW up to 2.7 MW.
