Liquid Wind and SAMSUNG E&A have entered into a strategic collaboration agreement aimed at accelerating the development of eFuel facilities beyond Europe, targeting regions in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. The partnership combines the strengths of both companies to evaluate and pursue opportunities for eFuel facility development, further extending Liquid Wind’s global reach and its ongoing business expansion efforts in the clean fuel sector.

This collaboration is a significant step in the growing global interest in sustainable and carbon-neutral fuels, particularly for hard-to-decarbonize industries such as shipping. Liquid Wind’s expertise in producing green eFuel, combined with SAMSUNG E&A’s engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services, will enable the partners to rapidly scale their operations across new markets.

Strategic Expansion in Emerging Markets

Under the terms of the agreement, SAMSUNG E&A will be engaged to provide engineering services for Liquid Wind’s eFuel projects in regions outside of Europe. These projects will focus on meeting the growing demand for fossil-free fuels, particularly in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, where energy needs are rising and demand for sustainable alternatives to traditional fuels is increasing.

Claes Fredriksson, CEO and founder of Liquid Wind, expressed his enthusiasm about the collaboration, highlighting it as a key milestone in the company’s strategy to grow its global presence in the eFuel market. “I am pleased to announce this new collaboration after welcoming Samsung Ventures as a new shareholder in Liquid Wind,” Fredriksson said. “Through this partnership, we will explore the feasibility of developing eFuel facilities outside of Europe to meet the increasing market demand for fossil-free fuel.”

A Commitment to Sustainable Energy Solutions

SAMSUNG E&A, a leader in the oil and gas EPC sector, will leverage its expertise in modular manufacturing and EPC services to support Liquid Wind’s eFuel facility projects. This collaboration aligns with SAMSUNG E&A’s commitment to combating climate change and expanding its footprint in the rapidly growing eFuel market.

Hong Namkoong, President and CEO of SAMSUNG E&A, emphasized the importance of eFuels in the fight against climate change. “Building on our strong legacy as a leader in Oil & Gas EPC, SAMSUNG E&A acknowledges the pivotal role of eFuels in mitigating climate change,” Namkoong said. “By harnessing our expertise, we are committed to driving growth in the eFuel market and ensuring the successful delivery of Liquid Wind’s projects.”

A Growing eFuel Market

The partnership between Liquid Wind and SAMSUNG E&A comes at a time when the eFuel sector is witnessing increased investment and development. Just weeks earlier, on November 21, 2024, Liquid Wind raised €44 million ($47 million USD) in Series C financing from Uniper, Hycap, and Samsung Ventures to support its efforts in meeting the growing demand for low-carbon fuels. This financing round represents one of the largest investments in the European eFuel sector this year and will accelerate the development of green eFuel production for sectors like shipping, which are among the most challenging to decarbonize.

Global Partnerships to Tackle Climate Change

The collaboration was formally announced during the Sweden-South Korea Strategic Summit on December 5, 2024, in Seoul, attended by a high-level business delegation from Sweden. The signing of the agreement between Fredriksson and Namkoong marks a key step in advancing Liquid Wind’s long-term goal of scaling up eFuel production and distribution worldwide, contributing to the reduction of global CO2 emissions.

As part of this partnership, the companies aim to further unlock new business opportunities within the eFuel sector, which is expected to play an increasingly important role in the decarbonization of industries reliant on hard-to-abate fuels, including shipping. With SAMSUNG E&A’s support in project delivery and Liquid Wind’s established expertise in green fuel production, the partnership is well-positioned to make significant strides in the global transition to clean energy.
